We see that the new city charter
of Kansas City is to empower the

in favor of the city of Rich II ill

holding it subject to such delin

It is suggested that it may be the
policy of our democratic friends
in the legislature and of the officers
in charge of our state institutions to
ask and urge increased appropria
tions all along (lie line so that in
the coming days and next campaign
they cm point to the extravagance
of the republican legislature. It is
noticed that there is a general call
for such increases and the ink will
not be dry on the printing of the
proceedings of the legislature be
fore the whole democratic press,
Town and county, citv and villi ge,
will begin a tegular howl and they
will keep it up from this time to
November 1906. There will not
be a single increase suggested in
the Republican house that the Dem
ocratic senate will not readily vote
for and the bigger the better, and
the more extravagant and useless
the more eager they will be to put
it through while it is hot and a go
ing. Then again the more offices
they can have created and the more
salaries increased the better for
them. More bank examiners are
wanted, these of course will be Re
publican now, but the new circuit
judges wont. These things with
others we might mention, together

II, A. Dklkmateu, Kecrrtary,
He never built a library
He didn't have the cash;
He didn't seek to turn the world
From follies vain and rash;
And yet he loved his fellow men
And sought to bring them ease
He scattered ashes on the walk
When it began to freeze.
The good people of Balltown and
vicinity held a basket supper Satur
day night. Jan. 7. While the sup
per was progressing quietly, a nest
of some five or six hoodlums from
about Metz, came upon the scene
and began to raise a racket by loud,
profane and obscene language and
proceeded to knock down and drag
out, such as they could master.
They beat up one young man con
siderably. The Constable of Metz
township and the Sheriff of the
county arrested the boys, took them
to Nevada, tried and found them
guilty, and as they bad no money
sent them to jail. Thev had good
jail supper and in about an hour
were released and turned loose
without paying anything while a n
other young man, who happened to
he in the crowd, but nut one of tbe
rioters, was lined 1 1 2. 75 and paid
it. The people of Vernon county
will foot the bills tor the hoodlums
who were released.

Some one has started a movement
to have the :9th Judicial circuit di
vided, making Bates and St.
Clair one circuit, and Henry and
Barton another. Lvidentty some
good Democratic lawyer thinks he
sees an opportunity for appoint
ment to office. Since so many Re
publicans have been elected to cir
cuit judgeships for six years there
has been more than this one move
incut to divide circuits and thus se
cure the appointment of a Demo
crat to office. Another dodge for
an opponent to charge Republicans
next campaign with creating a lot
of useless offices.
