the United States (ioolonicul Sur
vey prosentM tlio results of its
first six month's we) k inlhe sys
tematic colUvtlon of well records
nnd sitmples. lliis report Is the
first of a proposed series of mi
nimi publiciUions.
Tho importance of ncctirato
records of borings whs early rec
ognized by the more enterprising
of the drillers nnd by certain
companies operating in oil and
gas. Among the many ways in
which well records are of value
the following may be mentioned:
To the oil and gas driller they
furnish information as to (1) the
best point for locating the well,
(2) the depth of the supposed
productive bed, (3) the character
of the material to be penetrated,
(4) the amount of water which
will be encountered, (5) the
amount of casing required, und
(0) the limit of depth to which it
is desirable to drill. The rec
ords also show the cost of these
wells and the quantity and qual
ity of the supplies which they
furnish. To drillers and owners
of water wells the same informa
tion is supplied, but with them
the items affecting the cost are,
on account of the lower value of
the product, of increased impor
tance, and questions of head,
quantity, and quality of supply
again come to the fore. To pro
spective owners records are val
uable, us they show the results
obtained by others and the prob
abilities of success of new ven
tures. They are of assistance to
the geologist also, as they help
him to a more thorough under
standing of the geology of the
district, which in turn enables
him to answer with greater in
telligence the numerous ques
tion constantly referred to him
by drillers, well owners, and
others.
All the records that were re
ceived during the year of l'.HU,
accompanied by complete sets of
samples, are presented in this
roiort, as are also a considerable
number furnished by drillers,
contractor, well owners, etc.,
i representing other completed
j wells. The report doe not,
however, include all rcords fur
nished the Survey. Many confi
dential records were furnished
by oil companies and others in
terested in the development of
oil or mineral lands and can nut
be published. Other records
will be compiled and emlxdiod
in rejMrts on sjKcial regions,
. which will be published later.
1 This report was prepared by
, Messrs. M. I. Fuller and K. V.
IJnes. It includes also certain
material compiled from notes
furnished by Mr. A. C. Watch,
who formulated the system used
by the Survey for the collection
of well records and samples.
