Started Eight Weeks Ago nt E. M. Duff's Store Closed l.nst Sat urdayThe Prize Won by Miss flerlhlc Klntncr. The Tin Reason Why Contest which was started in this city some ciylit weeks ago at the hardware store of K. M. Duff, in which a beautiful Iluck's Junior Steel Riiiic waa offered to the girl under fourteen years of age giving the best "ten reasons why her mamma should use one of Iluck's steel range," creating much more interest than was anticipated, even by Mr. Duff himself. Sixty-eight little girls were registered in the contest, each one showing both merit ami originality in giving their in dividual reasons. The Judges were Mrs. K. A. Crewson Mrs. Geo. It. Holding and Mrs. II. K. J-.nloc, who were chosen because of being disinterested in any one pf the contes tants. The papers were registered by number and the judges made their decision without knowledge of tho names of the litl'c girls who competed for the prie, each number being care fully examined and the ladies found their task a bard one to deride. After the entire list had been examin ed the judges concentrated upon four numbers which weie considered the best, Fighting Mall Order Houses. The big mail order houses, who are now sending out catalogues by the thousands to catch country trade that should go to the legitimate home mer chant, arc receiving considerable at tention and condemnation by our ex changes and the country press gener ally, and merchants should appreciate this fact. There is no surer way in the world to stop this unfairness to the home merchant than for the coun try press to keep hammering it into the heads of families that they are in directly injuring themselves and build ing up the wealth of the big cities in buying through catalogues and dealing with mail order concerns. To effectually stop this business it devolves on the business men and newspapers, as well as the more rea sonable citizens of the community, to work hand in hand in this matter. It is necessary for the merchants to sup port and back the newspapers who are making this fight, advertise their wares at all times, meet prices made by the mail order houses, order any thing your customer may need, even though there may be no profit in it. Keep it up. and with the co-opera tion of fair minded people ami your local paper, the money that might go to the wealthy department stores in large cities will circulate here at home and enhance values here where all are personally interested. The Great Van Amburg Show. Our citizens will soon have an oppor tunity of visiting one of the good shows of the country. The Great Van Amburg Show will pitch its tents in Versailles 011 Tuesday, April 115th. The show prom ises to come this year larger and better than ever before. The many up-to-date features pieseuted by this show are novel and stattling. The horses and trained ponies are the best. Elephants, camels, lions and a large collect on of trained animals are to be seen in the grand free street parade, in the forenoon on the day of exhibition, these were No. (C held by Uerthie Klnt ncr, No i! by Krma Tillman, No. I7 by M.-ible Ooddard and No. 3 l.y Nilinie Ill.tckljurn. The final decision then dwindled down to Nos. ti2 and 2 and it required no little work on the part of the ladies to secure a decision between these two, the proof of the reasons offered in No. 6'J having n slight per cent the advantnev of No hence the decision was given aceoidiugly. The decision was announced at Mr. Duff's store in the presence of the con testants and persons inteiesUd which filled the place to i's utmost. Attorney I D. M. Wray announced the result and ' made a brief talk in presenting the covet- ed prie to the winner. The content was carried out impartially and while every little girl had trVd with all her energy, the fact that Uerthie Klntncr had won on the merit of her reasons, proved satisfactory to all concerned, and their own dis-ippointnieut was ap peased in the knowledge that the little bright eyed winner was worthy of the elegant Junior Range which had haunt ed her in her dreams previous to the (h-ci-iiou of the judges, and No. 2, who had come so near the winner, feels that the honor is justly bestowed. The adver tisment gained by Mr Duff for hisbusi nets generally and the atUuiion drawn l- bis fine stock of Uanges, stoves, llardwaie, garden implements, lawn mower, kitchen goods, paints, oils, wall pipen, tts., has fully 11-pnid I1I111 for the trouble engendered by the Ten Reasons why contest which has so happily termi uated, wuile thi judges, the contestants and all who became interested are en titled to his sincere thauki--for its decid ed biicees and the final result, Thos.
