THE. JiAlUUV 'DAILY TIMES, BAKHE, VT., TUESDAY, MAV 27, 1919. 2 HAWKER TELLS OF HIS FLIGHT They Encountered Cold Air, Then Clouds, and Finally Had Engine Trouble WATER CIRCULATION ACTED VERY BADLY He and Grieve Given Ova tion on Their Way from Scotland to England Edinburgh, Scotland, Muy 27. Harry (I. Hawker and Lieutenant Commander Muckenaie Grieve, who were rescued by the Danish ship Mary after the airplane in which they were attempting to cross the. Atlantic had alighted in midoccan, arrived here this morning on their way to London from Thurso, where they were landed by a British warship yesterday. As thev "left the train they were seized and lifted to the shoulders of a crowd which bore them to a hotel, where they had breakfast. They were heartily cheered when their train left the station at 10 o'clock. London, May 27. The correspondent of the Daily Mail who is traveling with Harry G. Hawker and Lieutenant Com mander Mackenzie (iricve on their way to this city sends from Inverness, Scot land, a detailed account of the difficul ties encountered by the two airmen dur ing their unsuccessful attempt to fly across the Atlantic. During the first four hours of the voy age, the air was freezing cold, but the airmen were quite comfortable. Hawker, however, was unable to steer a good course because of the clouds, being at times forced to go anmnd them. When about 800 miles out to sea the weather continued very bad and clouds roe to great heights. Several times Huwker tried to clear them, but lost height at every attempt and eajh time the machine was started climbing the water in the radiator boiled furiously, which involved waste. At last, however, the airplane reached u height of 12,000 feet and it was decided 1o stay at that level for the rest of the trip. 'Ve had not yet doubted being suc cessful in getting across,'' Hawker said, in describing his experience. "We were at that time above most of the clouds. Tim moon had risen and we were keep ing a good course, although we had to go a little slower and close the throttle to keep the water from heating up. "We continued at this height until we had been in the air 12 Va hours. Then cume heavy clouds again. They were very high, reaching a level of 13,000 feet and being very black. It was almost impossible to steer through them and each time I tried to climb the water boiled badly. Hawker then described his efforts to find the cause of the trouble with 'the water cooling system and said that he concluded something had got into the water filter between the radiator and the pumps and that the only thing to do was to stop the motor and put the nose of the machine down steeply with the hope that this might clear away the refuse in the filter. This was successful. BUILDS YOU UP The Right Way Spring Medicine That Begin and Ends Right. Adv. AUSTRALIANS REJOICE Over the Bravery Shown By Hawker in His Flight. Paris, May 27. The joy of the Aus tralian delegation at the peace confer ence over the news of the rescue of Harry Hawker was expressed in a state ment issued by it. "The world will not forgot his plucky attempt,' the statement said. "Aus tralia is proud of Harry Hawker and the-Australian delegation hails him as a worthy son of the great land which gave him birth. The flight was for ':e purpose of testing the ability of an air plane, to cross a great space in a new way. Technically, the airplane has yet to be proved, but Hawker's attempt lias more than proved the ability of the men who operate those machines. It is a great tiling to know we can still produce brave men. It is perhaps greater that the whole world, after five years of war, still admires bravery." CHIEF BENDER A MANAGER.
