Amy Levy, the young Unglish nrl wlio
had become famous in literature at a
bound, died a few days ago suddenly
at the age of twenty-three. She was a
graduate of Newnham College, Cam
bridge, and her first work was a volume
of poems. She then wrote and published
two novels of remarkable power. Ilcr
latest book, "Reuben Sachs," made a
sensation and received high praise from
London critics. At her own recpiest. she
was cremated at Woking. A small oak
chest, containing her ashes, was then
buried in a cemetery. Her premature
death is one of the saddest that has oc
curred in the literary world since poor
Chatterton perished in his pride.
The amount of water passing over
Niagara Falls varies with the height ot
the river. I'rof. V. B. Funning estimates
the average amount at 18,(iimi,iiiii) cubic
leet per minute. Allowing (iU'j, pounds
to the cubic foot, this would give a total
of 562,500 tons per minute, or 25,312,
500 tons in 5 minutes, ot which some
what more than two-thirds passes over
the Horseshoe Falls. Other estimates
place the total amout passing over both

Thomas Monahan. an Irish millionaire,
who lived in Melbourne for hall a century
