IMiilidclpliia Record: When a reputable
tnetvhaiit like Joseph 1. (I'Donohut, ot
New York, alter a career ot many years
in the coflee trade, is comiellecl to retire
from business bv reason of tlie KaiiililiiiK

scandal. thcm'i not at all new, ljcconies
sufficiently odious to call for a revival ot
that spirit of commercial morality which
was a dislinguisliiiij; quality of the one
time "meicliant princes" oft he Republic.
Mr. O'onohuechar)cs that the ultimate
end of the trade, as conducted by the
Coffee HxehaiiKe, is "the robbery ot the
poor man." That certainly is the result
in the case of all syndicates, whether
thev be called Iixchanes or otherwise,
where jjambin;; methods arc allowed to
subvert the legitimate methods of trade.
While legislation by no means oilers a
hopeful solution of the problem ot re
straining t hem, it is clearly the province
of legislation to protect the poor against
the species of robbery of which Mr.
( I'llonohue complains.
Manchestkk, October :io. The C.u.ir
dian's commercial article savs: The
market is quiet, but the steady wants ol
buvers apear to be mostly satisfied,
although after this theie is a pause in
the business Ix-cause tliey cannot obtain
all wants at 'von low rates. The condi
tion of distributing markets is lairly
healthv and steady. A continued de
mand is expected. The demand for ex
port vara is slight. Havers for the con
tinent are purchasing small quantities at
full prices. There is even less purchasing
for India and China. There is a demand
for most makes of India and China
shirtings. The best printers are well
under engagement. India tine and fancy
goods are' mostly sold forward for
several weeks, though occasionally or
ders are wanted. The demand for heavy
goods is steady. 1

Rev. Ir. Talmage will himself break
ground for his new tabernacle Monday
afternoon. I n Wednesday he will start
for his trip to l'alestiue. I luring his ab
sence the congregation will meet in the
Acndcmv of Music. The new tabernacle
will be readv for occupancy in Septeinlier.
IH',10. I r. talmage will go from here to
London, thence to Rome, where he will
call on the I'ope. There is some criticism
about the wisdom of his leaving his con
gregation at this period, but be silences
it by intimating that he will give to the
building fund the proceeds of a book, the
materials lor which he will collect during
the pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
