investigation in the Hen ier lynching case
before judge Phillips has been going nil
all day. The State is still examining
witnesses, but no new developments
have taken place, and no evidence of a
very damaging character was brought
Court adjourned rather early this
evening, for the want of witnesses on the
part of the State. It is understood that

There are two conlidence men in Aslie
ville plying their vocation. We might
call t'lem thieves. They will buy a trille.
and give von a ten doilar bill; von will
most likely give them a five dollar bill
and hard money for change. They will
say, "Oh! did I give you a ten? 1
intended to give you a one. Just give
me back the ten and 1 will give you
one." At the same time they will put
your five dollar bill away, and deny gel
ting it, if you should notice it. ( ne is
five feet, and about ten inches high,
black eyes, biaek mustache, thirty years
old, stiff hat. and brown, thick, beaverish
overcoat. The other about the same
age and size; with blucevesand mustache
and dress little under that of a drummer.

Cieneral Jackwon Dead.
knoxville Tribune October .11.
General A. H. Jackson died suddenly at
his home at Jonesboro yesterday at four
p. m., aged eighty-four years. The old
soldier was well known in Knoxvillc and
has manv relatives here.
The deceased was a gallant officer in
the late war, serving the Confederacy
with much distinction. He has been liv
ing quietly at Ins home at Jonesboro
since the war and reached the ripe old
age of eighty-four years. lie was
familiarly known as General "Muilwall"
Jackson winning the title for bravery in
the field. A number of persons went to
Jonesboro on the early morning train to
attend the funeral, though it was not
known last night when it would occur.

In the clrk's office of the Chancery
court yesterday a mortgage deed was re
corded from the Richmond and Danville
Railroad Company to the Central Trust
Company of New Vork.
The mortgage is to secure the payment
ul' $-',50(1,11110 in bonds issued to purchase
rolling-stock and other equipments for
the Danville Company.
The bonds are to be issued in sums ol
$1,00(1 and are payable in gold twenty
years from September 1, 1SS0.
The interest at the rate of o per cent, is
to De pa in scmi-annuallv.
The deed covers forty-three pages
printed in pamphlet form,

ble and unsettled, closing firm at a slight
advance. An early improvement was
due to the course of Liverpool in recover
ing an early decline, then under pro
longed dullness there was a decline of
a5 points. A brisk recovery in the last
hour was attributed to the fact that
some of the Southern markets were more
active instead of showing the weakness
that was expected. The weather South
was generally favorable for crop pros
pects. Cotton on the spot was steady.
