The oceanic steamer Zealandia arrived
from Sydney nnd Auckland, via Hono
lulu, at noon to-day, she reports that as
she wasenteiing the harbor at Honolulu
November 16th, I'rof, VanTassell, bal
loonist, made an ascension from the
shore nnd dropped from the balloon in a
parachute. He fell into the ocean about
two miles from the shore and one mile
from the steamer. He was seen no more,
and it is supposed that he was eaten by
sharks. VanTassell left San Francisco a
few weeks ago tor Honolulu, and Aus
tralia where he expected to jjivc exhibitions.

thousand pounds of Sea Island cotton
was destroyed by tire last nijjht. The
