Anniversary of the "Crusade."
December 23rd, 1873, was made mem
orable by the springing into existence til
the Woman's Crusade against the sa
loons, and now, after fifteen years, three
hundred thousand women, whose hearts
have been so stirred as to enlist in this
grand national organization, propose to
celebrate the 23rd ot December, by keep
ing "crusade camp fires" along the lines.
Hence, on to-morrow, the Asheville W.
C. T. V. will hold a meeting in the Y. M.
C. A. hall, at 4 p. m.
Not onlv members, but all interested
in the cause of temperance are cordialh
invited to attend.
At Hillsboro, Ohio, (the "Cradle of tin
Crusade' ) most impressive services wil
be held, in which Miss Willard anil othei
prominent workers will take part.
How marvelous has been the growtl
of this mighty work. Fifteen years ago.
only one little praying band of timid wo
men, in the Presbyterian church at Hills
boro, on to-morrow, 74U5 "campfirts"
will be kindled by as many local unions
in the United States, to say nothing 01
the organizations in foreign lands.
The echoes of that Crusade movement
have rung round the whole world, ami

places. Next in order come the Middle
States with 16 chairmanships, the New
England States with 7, the Pacific slope
with three, and the South with but one,
Mr. Biower, of North Carolina, commit
tee on ex)ienditures in the postotfice de
partment. Pennsylvania heads the list
of individual States witty 8 chairmen.
New York comes next with 7, Ohio and
Illinois i each, Wisconsin 4, Iowa, Mich
igan and Kansas 3 each, Maine, Indiana.
Massachusetts and Minnesota 2 each,
Nebraska, Montana, Missouri, Vermont,
North Carolina, Connecticut, Oregon,
New Jersey, California and Rhode Island
New Hampshire, Delaware, Maryland,
Virginia, South Carolina, West Virginia.
