Iiikh of the Hoard.
Capt. Nalt Atkinson made his applica
tion for a charier ol the Asheville Fast
Line and Suburban railroad, ill the mcet
ittg of the Hoard of Aldermen last night,
lie had the charier written in due form
and secilying the route on which
the eoniiiativ proposes to build. His
route, as given last night, is as follows:
From near the Western North Carolina
railroad to Sotithside avenue, up South
side avenue to South Main street, tip
Valley street to Sycamore, up Sycamore
to South Main, and up Valley lo College,
across or with College to Locust, thence
to Chailolle and across Charlotte to
the corporation line, thence across the
city to Pearson's bridge and up the river
to the beginning. Capt, Atkinson's as
sociatcs as uaiucil in the application ate
W. T. I'cnnituan, W. T. Reynolds, C, M.

Fagg, and they waul the exclusive priv
ilege for such a roil I lor the term ol ten
vears.
Mr. McHrayer representing the French
Nroad Valley railroad objected to tin
ten year clause; as he did not think it
right lo grant thai to this company
when his road had made the first appli
cation. He expressed a luie thai t lie
board would grant Capt. Atkinson's
charter. The matter was rcterrcd to llu
Mavoraud the street committee, with
instructions to report al a subscipicnl
meeting.
Mr. I. L. Nrown, who lives on Town
mountain, asked ei mission to lap the
piK-above the staniliie and force the
water to his house with a hydraulic rain
The matter was referred to Clerk Miller
with power lo act.
Capt. T. W. ration objected to having
the grade on South Main street, lictwccii
tlic Square and Fugle sircct, changed,
lie said that it would necessitate the
changing ol the grade of the street rail
way track verv maleriallv and would
make il much heavier, causing more

Hated lh.it the cost ol lowering the g.-o

Aaron Washington, colored, who lives
near I he electric light station. coui laiued
ol a brick kiln, which he said was within
thirty-live leel of his house, and said he
was afraid the heat caused by hurtling
ihe kiln would endanger his house. An
ordinance making il unlawful to-cie. t n
lire a brick kiln in dangerous proximity
to any house in the city was pasted and
Col. Naird instructed lo notify the par
ties owning the brick kiln of the ordi
nance. Mr. (. A. Shiiloril, as a tax payer,
called the attention of the Hoard to the
quality of the brick used ill paving the
streets, and said lliey had Ih-cii pro
nounced until for the purpose by couiie-
leul judges as loo soft, liiul said the Mc
Adam was prelerable toil. Mr. Illautou
told him that if he would read the eon
tract he would find that the citv was
thoroughly protected by it from any im-.-rlcctions
in the pavement.
"Il by the terms of this contract the
Hoard ol Aldermen had the right to ob
ject to any unlit material which linn con
tractor might iitlempl lo use," said Mr.
Shuforil, "I am glad to know that
there is such a provision in the contract,
and Iiok- I lie board will avail themselves
of its terms and reject the brick which
arc now piled up on the sidewalk to Ik
used in the proposed pavement, its I am
satislieil that they are totallv unlit lor

Captain I'atlon snid thai the street
railroad company had a proposition
from the contractors, tohaiil material for
the government building, and asked isr

UNBOUNDED HOSPITALITY.
Cltlr.cilM of ANlievllle Kt-Nuoud to
Hie Call.
Citizens of Asheville me often enter
tained with criticisms upon the hospital
ity mid sociability of their city. Some
visitors to the city have been very severe
in criticism of this sort and the citizens of
other pliiees have expressed like opinions.
Asheville lias borne these criticisms very
meekly and have admitted that as Ashe
ville was not ipiitc perfect, it might be
that her lack was in Ibis direction.
Nut the approaching Cicticral Assembly
bids fair to prove an effective answer to
this criticism. The prospect at present
is that every member will be entertained
by some one of the citizens, and not only
every number, but even- wile or mother
or daughter that comes, and also many
of those who will visit the city for their
own pleasure.
The full significance of this will appear
only when it is known that as a rule the
church in which the Assembly meets has
a large board-bill to a, o quests for
whonrentei Iniumctil is not provided. In
a city not a thousand miles from Ashe
ville, and not many years ago, the bills
amounted to over ?l,00ii. The Presby
terian church here does nut expect at
present to payout-cent for board because
the gcncnni and wariu-hcartcd hospital
ity of the residents will make this unnec
essary. Il will lie a iiuiipic distinction
liir Asheville as against the larger cities
of the South, and it is the strongest dis
prool possible of the criticism made
upon it.
This docs uol mean ihal all guests

Mathews, P.P., ol Loudon, Fug., will
represent the Pan-I resb terian Alliance,
and arrange for I lie next ipiailrcmital
