I could nut think of uny way nnd I

of mine in London about it. He snid, i

I upened it there was this uxe. I could
not believe it was R-enuine. So I wrote
to my friend and he sent me the story
with the correspondence.
He bad written to a friend of his and
also ol Gladstone I'rof. Oscar Brown
inn of Kiims Collcue. Cnmbridue. Prof.
Browning wrote to Gladstone, nnd in
due time received this axe. He forwarded
it to me with a bit of Latin verse that
Andrew Lnnn afterward versified Enu-

something like this: 'Across the ocean
coes this uxe. n svmbol not of war but
of ieacc; mav it hew down the brush of
inscora, ami stand lorever as a si",n oi
iicnce between brothers.' Then 1 sent
Mr, Gladstone this bit of verse:

"The old man wrote me it letter of
thanks untl modest depreciation. I'm
going to have the Latin inacrilieil upon n
silver plate, and have the plulc fastened
to the hnndle."
This remarkable axe which Mr. Field
brings to tlie.se shores to lie kept in Hi
cago is of great weight. The blade
rustv and the edge is dulled. The heel
chipped. The hnirlle has many dents in
it. Mr. Field regarded his prize with
eves full of tender nride.
"lust think," said he, "this blade hns
cut deep into many a tree at Huwarden,

sciisntionul olav in London offered me by
letter $100 tor the nxe. He said he wns
a woodman in one scene, and attempted
to murder the villuin with au axe. He
thought this particular axe would be
