The advance in prices of stocks wavered, 'then came to a halt and finally turned backwards again today. There was some natural realizing on yesterday's considerable rise, which served partly to account for the reaction- There was besides a fresh advance In the rates for call money and less confidence, as a result, in the ade quacy of the assistance offered by the treasury department to carry the money market through the converging demands of the January settlements. With the reaction in the market there was some shrinkage in the rate of activity from that of yesterday. There has been no actual employ ment of the funds included in the treasury's offers yet, as none of it has come into possession of the banks, ow ing to delays in securing and acceptance of bonds for security for deposits and the formalities required to sell United SiateS 4 per cent, under the arrange! plan. The liberal offering of funds yes terday were thus to some extent a uso of the expected increase in resource? before they were in hand. This dl-sro-Bition on the part of the active specu lation to lick up funds as fast as avail able comes in for its shore of criticism. It Is also true, however; that the senti mental effect of the action of the treas ury authorities was to release sr.nn which had been held out of the money market for higher rates and which were thus brought out. It was new re ' quirements that stiffened up the rate again today. The long expected announcement oi i subscription rights to new Great North ern stocks and the quotation of the riirr.ts in the outside market was fol lowed bv a violent decline in owir which chilled speculative 1 thusiasm over other expected deve.or ments. The money markets were hard er in London, Paris and Berlin today, but foreign exchange dates here re icW in response to our own stronger ' money market. There was considerable increase of selling pressure on stocks late in the day and the closing tone was easv at general declines. Bonds irregular. The cotton market was less active today hut con tinued very feverish and unsettled. Prices sold off to about the low point of yesterday during the first few min utes, hut. later steadied as a result of covering. The close was very steady with prices unchanged to an advanca of 5 points. Sales were estimated at 300.000 bales. The opening was steady with an ad vance of 3 points to a decline of four teen points, the improvement being on the near months owing to better cables than expected and the big spot sales in the English market. But there were heavy selling orders in the hands of wire and commission houses for, the latter months which were probably the result of yesterday's late market calls and shortly after the opening January sold off to 9.39 and March to 9.52. Covering checked the decline and there was a rally to a little over the closing prices of yesterday. Trad ing was very quiet at the advance auu GRAIN AND PROVISIONS. Chicago, December 12.
