W. $G.05 NEW YORK STOOK 3IARKET New York, Oct 20 After going through some further painful liqu' na tion the stock market became quiet bouyant in tone at a recovery, and there was a notable accession of conB dence that the worst of the trouble was safely passed. The outlook in the banking situation is considered to be distinctly improv ed. Conditions in New York itself have fade wide recovery toward the nor mal and increasing hopes are felt of reducing the period in which 'the extraordinary measufes must be pio longed. The re-adjustment of the loan ac counts of the bank proceeds, and this was the factor tbat caused the severe depression of the early part of the day in the stock market. A factor of relief in the money market was the paying out at J. P. Morgan and Com pany's office, in anticipation of No vember 1st coupon and dividend obli gations, estimated to run as high as $11,000,000. Another feature of the day's news was the continued rise in the price of copper at New York metal exchange in spite of a sharp reaction in tie London price of the metal. The preparation of a plan for the apportionment of the Union Pacific's holdings of securities in diner com panies to stockholders made that stock a leader, in the bouyani rally of the latter part of the day, practically all of which were held to the strong closing. Bonds were weak. Total sales par value $2,988,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. Total sales of stocks today were 525,100 shares COTTON FUTURES New York, Oct. 30. The cotton mar ket was firm and higher today on an easier money market, reports ol a better spot demand, covering ol shorts and, toward the close, bull support. The market closed firm at a net ad vance ot 18 to 28 points. Sales were estimated at 300,00 bales. The market opened steady at a uct advance of 7 to 9 points and during the session sold up to a net gain of I to 21 points on theactivemonths as a result of higner caoies, less xav- orable weather reports and cover ng. The upward movement was check ea by the large estimate for tomorrow's receipts at Houston, and reports were that the storm in the southwest had been confined to coast sections, thus relieving apprehensions of damage in the interior. After selling off to within four or five points of last night's finals how ever under realizing by yesterday's buyers and a renewal of bear pressure, which was encouraged by rather gloomy reports from New Orleans and the announcement that the balance of the week had been declared a legal holiday in the state of Washington, the market firmed up again and the highest point of the day was just be fore the close, when there was more ajggressive bull support and more ac tive covering as a result of the New Orleans wires reporting an increased spot demand and reports that cotton was in better demand in foreign ex change circles. Last prices were within a point or two of the best. Southern spot markets were gener ally unchanged to l-8c higher. The increase in the December premium attracted some attention and revived rumorr concerning a December bull clique.
