Horn Il,ni seems to lie doubly nlllieted with MrKinlerism. It not only pays trilute to the fallacious policy of McKiuley, of Ohio, with mankind generally! hut is also coni-jx-llcd to donate f l;l().ii(K) as a tax of fering to the li-gislativegctiius of one McKiuley of Moline. This is a nice little bill of epeno fur l'n cle Sam to settle, but there is con siderable satisfaction in knowing that lawlessness and anarchr will ' not le tob-rated in this eountrv at any cost. Sr.XVToK ;.m,-m.-s reply to the tailorings of ivtTcr was t l.Hmi-tit and patriotic to the core, and is sure to have an excellent effect tiwn t lie minds of the Nople in all sections of the country. Ar bitration is the only eventual settle ment of difference bctucen labor and capital, and the statesman who devise a statute that will insure the adjustment of the tjuestion on this line will win enduring fame. The most unfortunate feature of the re cent disturbance, aside from thedeli- ance of the federal courts and the brief reign of anarchy, wns the fact that the innocent who were in no way to blame for the situation suf fered more than the men whose ol stinaey and disregard for the right of humans brought all the trouble on. Lincoln on allal anil jtlMr. The following is from President Abraham Lincoln's message to the second session of the Thirty-seventh congress to be found in the appendix to the Congressional 'il'be of the Thirty-seventh congresssecond ses sion, page 4: Monarchy Is sometimes hinted at ns a osnle refuge from the power of the people. In my present jmsi tion I could scarcely lm justified were I to omit raising a warning voice against this approach of returning lesMitistn. It is not needed nor tit. ling lu re that a general argument should be made in favor of xpular institutions, but there is one xiiul with its connections not so hack ue veil n most others to which I ask a brief attention. It is the effort to place capital on an equal fooling with, if not uIhivc. IlKr in the structure of government. It is assumed that la btir is available only in connec tion with capita!, that'nobod y labors unless soniclmdy else owning capital somehow by the use of it induces him to labor. Lultor i prior to and independent of capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor and conld neverhave existed if labor had not lirst existed. Labor is the snperior of capital and deserves much the higher consideration. No men living ate more worthy to. be trusted than those who toil up from poverty; none less inclined to take or touch aught which they have not honestly earned. Let them beware of surrendering a political power which they already jiosscss. and which, if surrendered, will surely be used to close the door of advance ment against such as they, and to fix new disabilities and burdens .upon them till all of liberty shall be lost. May Reject the (schedule. The New York World reporters at Washington have made a canvass or the house on the sugar schedule and telegraph the result as follows: The sugar trust will meet its Waterloo in the house of representa tives unless all signs fail. A careful canvass of the house has been made since the senate passed the sun-ar schedule, and ont of 253 members who have replied only two men have I ccn found who express a willing ness to aid with their votes the at tempt to perjetuau- upon the statute books the bargain by w hich the trust hopes to secure protection at the expense of the people. The corres pondents have asked each member of the house who conld be reached at this time the following question: 'Will you vote for the sugar sched ules adopted by the senate?" The replies have indicated an almost solid opposition to the amendments in grafted upon the bill bythe'-Gor-niaiiizers." 'Of the members who have responded 202 declare their hostility to the trust and their inten tion of opposing in the house the concessions it has secured in the senate. The remaining members, with two exceptions, are non-cominital, but by no means friendly to the sen ate bill, for among them are nearly all the members of the ways and means committee, who. while oppos ing the senate amendments, hesitate at this time to give public expression to their opinions, as the bill is so soon to come before them for official consideration.
