A Frgkciimax has estimated that there are 61,000 breweries in the world. Germany, he says, easily leads with L'O.L'IU, which produce 4 750,0 .0.000 liters of beer yearly a meriting equal to about one and three- inarter pints. England comes next vlth 12,874 breweries and an otttpn: of 2,600,000 liters; then the Uniteil States with 2,500 breweries and an output of 3,600,000.000 liters. in telegraphic dispatches re- rentlv announced that the Bethle hem, J'a., iron company had secured a contract lor iz.uou tons or armor plate for Russian ironclads, bidding agaimt the greatest European manu facturers. 1 bis snows the combined folly t nd robbery of a hisrh tariff to kern f ireign wares out of this roar kct. Polios Inspector Andrew S. Williams was plainly unset in consequence of the testimony before the Lexow committee. A reporter who asked him for a statement regarding Captain Smittbtrgor'a sworn statment that money collected from lawbreaker had buen regularly divided with 'Williams and othor police officials was the recipient of a volley of vile epithets hurled at him by tho inspector, who also advanced upon the reporter with clench od and upraised hand. "Get ont of here," roarod Williams. "I won't talk to anybody." A suggestion that he was the one fa vored in being given an opportunity to clear himself in the estimation of the pub lic mcruly angered tho Inspector all the more. You're a d n fool," he shouted. You don't know enough to take no for an answer, uo out of here or 1 11 have you put out" Byrnes Will Not Talk. Inspector McAvoy, who is also impli cated in bribe-taking by Captain Schmitt- bergur s testimony, asserts thut he never received money from Schmittboriror. Superintendent Byrnes would nut talk of the incidents and took refupe behind the locked dour of his private ofuoo. Among people who generally have good fore- Knowietige regarding police exposures there is a well defined expectation that Inspector Williams will be heard before the Lezow committee before it concludes tho taking of testimony, which will be next Thursday afternoon. It is repre sented that Williams regards himself as having been attacked by Schmlttberger with the purpose of shielding himself and Superintendent Byrnes. Friends of Vt llliams are represented as noting in this connection the long-standing enmity between the superintendent and tho rank' ing inspector and the fact that Schmitt- bcrgcr, once a bosom friend and the con fidential wardmon for Williams, has of late been on terms of intimacy- with Byrnes. These people see throughout Schniitttierger's testimony of evidence that Byrues was always in the captuin's mind and that care was taken from first to last to shield the superintendent. Counter Coufeatloo Expected. The feeling between Williams and Byrnes is one of bitter resentment and upon this and tho theories above recited are based the expectations of a counter confession by the inspector. Mayor Gil' roy was asked if he intended to take any steps to bring about tho removal of Com missioner Martin and Shoehan in conse quence of Captain bchmittberger state ments. Ue said: "Before taking any action charges would huve to bo preferred against these commissioners to me. I being the judge In the caso could not take the initiative. As yet tho matter has not been brought to my attention officially. If the charges wore made and proven I could only rec ommend to tho governor their dismas sal." Commissioner Shoehan was emphatic in his denial of the statements affecting him which were embodied in Captain Schmitt- bcrgar s testimony. A special meeting of tho police board will be held to consider the bchmtttuerger testimony. Charge Against Fellows Dlamlaaed. ALBAST, X. Y., Dec 84. Governor Flower has dismissed the charges against District Attorney Fellows. The governor says: "It is clear to me that the Important charge that the dis trict attorney has neglected his duty in not bringing Indicted persons to trial is not only wholly unproved but It is act ually disproved by the evidence." liob s Milk Dealer ol In Cash.
