A dog in the building heard the noise and scared the intruder before he secured an entrance. It's rather late for making hay, but ijuitc a number of farmers have been helped greatly by the late crop, one larmer getting zo tons of millet from nine acres. Corn is plentiful in this vicinity and will be cheap. And after all, the crops have been fair considering the condition of affairs at the beginning of the season. JOSLIN. Joslix, Oct. 1 Mrs. E. L. Wil liams has insured her barn, bay and grain in the Coe and Zunia Mutual. For two weeks the friends of Alex ander Dunbar have been very much alarmed on account cf his being taken down with summer complaint. How. ever, at this writing he is much bet ter and is sitting op. W. H. Whitesides' new store, which is 37x70, is shingled and weather- boarded and ready for the plasterers. He has purchased a Victor safe and has had a brick vault built, so that ho intends to make himself safe against fire, if not against burglars. John Neer has moved his goods from Joslin and has taken up his abode in Erie for the present, but ul timately intends to plant himself on a farm, which be has in view. Wheth er it is small crops and big prices or large crops and small prices, John thinks nothing beats farming. Jake Graham, of Iowa, son-in-law of Alexander Dunbar, arrived at Jos lin Monday morning last. He has been to New York with a car load of poultry. He spent a week with Charley Beck, who is in New York visiting his mother and other rela tives. He says: '-Charley is having a good time and is jnst in his glory." In visiting our creamery Monday last I found Mr. Talbee testing the cream. It is very interesting to see the cream tested by a Babcock test in order to ascertain how much pnre butter fat is contained in 109 pounds of milk. At this time of the year the test begins to show richer "milk on account of the improvement in the pasture. The quantity ot milk is like wise increasing, as well as the qual ity 6.400 pounds were received Mon day last. The opening ot the Aldredge coal mines will be a very fortunate affair not only for Joslin and vicin ity, but for all the surrounding country. A new ferry has been es tablished and only half fare is charged for those hauling coal. Teams are now coming from Cordova and Sterling and from other distant places. ' The coal seems to be of a ood quality and 5 cents per bushel is charged at the bank. The pro prietor made the remark that yon might put in 100 miners and you couldn't dig out the coal in 40 years." C. M. Habbart went through three fields of corn owned by Hon. William Payne, F. E. Crompton and David Adams, and picked two ears in each field, that is six ears altogether. which weighed nine pounds, and he says there were hundreds of ears all around just as large. Mr. Hubbart sent the six ears to W. G. Besler, who is division superintendent of the C, 15. & Q.. as a sample of some of the corn gron in this locality. Mnce writing tbe above we are in formed that nine pounds for six ears of corn is nothing to brag about. Ears were exhibited at Joslin fair weighing two-and-a-half pounds each. 1 be wedding ol Justin Dauev. wbo is a son of Lyman Dailey, and Miss Mamie Tinsman, daughter of Frank Tinsman, came off Thursday even ing last at the residence ti the bride's grandmother. Mrs. E. L. Wil liams. The event is spoken of as a very happy one, which was attended by about seventy-five relatives and friends, the ceremony being per formed by Rev. Thompson, of Port Byron. 1 he presents were numer ous and of a substantial nature. The newly married couple will settle down and work the farm owned bv Mrs. Williams. The reception at the groom's parents Friday evening was even more largely attended than the wedding, there being over one hundred in attendance. Miltcm ix Pakvo. COUNT! BUILDING.
