Chairman Tanner, of the Illinois republican committee, has been car rying on a telegraphic correspon dence wun senator ijuay lor more than a week. Senator Quay is giving . his attention now entirely to his race for chairman of the republican na tional committee. Chairman Tanner ia favorable to the senator. He is undoubtedly Influenced in Quay's be half by Senator Cullom. Tanner may be trying to open negotiations with the Pennsylvania boss for the Cullom presidential boom. It has been the dream of Mr. Tanner's life to see Cullom president. But if the opinions of the persons who are in the senator's confidence are to be credited. Mr. .Cullom is not in the presidential race. Said one of them recently: 'Senator Cullom does not consider that he Is now in the calculations for 1896. He was outspoken for Senator Allison and believes if the conven tion was held now that Allison would be nominated easily. The senator says Tanner is an open and avowed candidate for governor of Illinois, and Cullom believes Tanner will be nominated." f eraser sUd raWkJl History. Slaw Tark Mstcary. In Senator Sherman's book no ref erence Is made to a certain bit of in side history relating to the republi can national eonvantlnn f in&n air. Sherman and Mr. Blaine both awaited the development f that convention in Washington. Each uau a private wire running to his private office, and bulletins were constantly being flashed back and forth from their representatives at Chicago. After the balloting had pro ceeded for a day or two without re suit Sherman sent this message to Mr. Blaine: "if yon will instruct yonr mends to vote for me I can be nominated on the next ballot," Mr. Blaine's vote in the convention was about 284 and Mr. Sherman's 93. Mr. Blaine's comment when he received Mr. Sherman's message waa sub stantially as follows: "Sherman evidently thinks that the mountain should go to Mahomet. It is very strange that it has not occurred to him that it his friends will vote for me I can be nominated." He then sent Mr. Sherman a message that unless he (Blaine) could be nomi nated on the following day Gen. Gar field Would be thj nnmlnM nt tha. convention. Mr. Sherman evidently did not believe it. as he gave no in structions to hia friends to support the Maine statesman. His story of the famous convention of 1830 will not be complete unless he includes an account of tbe incident just re ferred to, which took place between t. f a at ma era . uimseii ana mr. tuaine in washing ton.
