pionenrs of Iowa journalism, died at
10 o'clock last night at his summer
home at (iroton. Vt. Mr. Kichard
son bad lieen eloselv identified with
Davenport's history." and apart from
the influence he exerted through hts
paper he w as a man of jjreat personal
force. Il was a student, a traveler
ami an author. He enjoyed research
and was of an inventive turn of mind
anil loved the mechanical art as well
as the field of literature, in which he
was so distinguished. . He traveled
much, and lining one of the country's
foremost descriptive writers. his
books of travel were possessed of a
peculiar charm. The most conspicu
ous of these was his '-(iirdle of the
Kitrth, " written a few years ago after
;in extended tour of the globe. Polit
ically, he was a democrat, and was con
spicuous in the polities of Iowa. His
rty had often sought to honor and
ward him. but he always avoided
office of anv kind. He had held lii!i
place in the AsmciuR-iI Press.
Mr. liicharson was born in Orange

tling in Davenpoil, where he launched
