J- Higgins, of Davenport, employed iu the equipment department at Rock Island arsenal, who a few weeks ago lost two lingers of his right hand through an accident iu operating a machine, had another finger crushed last night, making amputation neces sary. The unfortunate man has but the thumb and small linger left on the right hand. Ernest Held, aged 20, suffering from typhoid fever, was sent to St. An thony's hospital yesterday afternoon for treatment by i'oormaster Lidders, to w hom he appealed for assistance. He said his home was in Chicago and that he came to work for the Flick & Johnson Construction compa ny, at Davenport, and a few days ago was taken sick, and being without funds applied to the Davenport author ities for aid, but thev refused it ami told him to go back to Illinois. The Rock Itland postolliec has been notified by the Washington author ities of the establishment of a United States postal station' at Santiago de uba, the rates being as follows: Mail matter jht half ounce, 5 cents; single postals, 2 cents; double postals, 4 cents: second ami third-class matter, 1 cent pertweonnees: fourth class, 1 cent per ounce: registration fee, 8 cents. If postage is not paid in full, double the amount of the delicient postage at above rates shall be collected on de livery. It is supposed these rates will apply to Porto Rico. Gustav Stengel has a letter from Rampart City, Alaska, written last March, stating that his son, William E. Stengel, was desporatelv ill. and fearing for his recovery on account of the absence of medical attendance, there being no physicians in the town. The letter is from a friend of William.
