The executive committee of the
board met last Monday to consider the
matter of holding a school durin
the summer vacation. A special com

plans to be presented to the board at
a later meeting.

In the "Biography of Charles Carle

companying the committee to the borne
of Mr. Lincoln in SpringSeld, Ilia, to
notify him cf his nomination for presi
dent. They reacrwd Springfield early in
the evening, and after supper at the
hotel made their call on Lincoln. It
was not to te a very formal interview.
Lincoln stood in the parlor, dressed
in a black frork cent. The announce
ment was made, and his reply seemed
brief. He was evidently much con-,
strained, bnt cs Boon as the last word
bad been spoueu be turned to Mr. Kel
ley of Pennsylvania, the chairman of
the committee, and said : "Judge, you
are a pretty tal! man. Uo:t tall are

"I teat you ! I am 6 feet 3 without
my bich heeled boots."
"Pennsylvania bows to Illinois, where,
we have been told, there were only lit

This was an allusion to Douglas, who
bad been called the "Littlo Giant."
One by one the members of the com
mittee were introduced to Lincoln, and
when the handshaking was over he
"Gentlemen, Mrs. Lincoln will be
pleased to see yon iu the adjoining
room, where you will find some refresh

antly, but the only visible 6ign cf re
freshments was a white earthen pitcher
filled with ice water This was possibly
Mr. Lincoln's little joke, for it was
afterward ascertained that bis Repub
lican neighbors had offered to furnish
wines and liquors, which he refused to
have in his bouse, and that his Demo
cratic friends had sent round baskets of
cbanipagno, which were also declined.

It is the devout wish of nearly all people to live to a ripe old ape.
None of us want to die young. This universal desire can be realized if
care be taken of the health in early and middle life. A little precaution tlien
will add many years to our existence. Death can be kept away a kmg
time. Happy, "healthy old age will be the lot ot the woman who promptly

take the female child safely over the dividing line between girlhood and
womanhood. As a wife she needs it to help her through the trials of
pregnancy and childbirth with as little discomfort as possible. At the
Change of Life it will help her over the dangerous place that appears in
her pathway between 40 and 50. Then will come manv years of truly
blissful existence. She will grow old slowlv and gracefully. To the last
