Fkince Fkkdekick Leopold, of Prussia, brother-in-law of the kaiser. la popularly known as the "Gigerl Konig." or "King of Dudes." Haki'Ek's Weekly grows candid ana critical. It remarks: "We won der If Mr. McKinloy knows what some good men not gold democrats or in dependents, but old-time republicans are saying of him. J he v are say ing that be has done more harm to the country than Mr. Bryan could have done. No one can regret more than ourselves that this is the fact We are not prepared to assent to it, but it is certainly worthy of Mr. Mc Kinley's serious relleciion. . He is alienating the friends who made his election possible and whose support may be absolutely necessary to his party next year." Individual Prosperity. St. LouW Post-Dispatch. That prosperity is hero and in full tide cannot be doubted even by the most skeptical. The grain crop of tne west ana northwest is enormous; every blast furnace in Pittsburg is producing to its full capacity: the coke ovens are all hot; pig iron cannot be"put on the market fast enough to till the demand. the copper produc tion is the largest ever reported; ex ports are rising, immigration is in creasing. The more wealth the coun try has the strpDger will be its posi tion in the political as well as finan cial world. Uut it is not enough for a nation to be rich. Real prosperity depends not only upon the quantity of wealth, but upon its equitable dis tribution. Unless all the people re ceive each his just share of the annu al increment the story of prosperity is a glittering dream or nightmare The Troth Will Oat. New York Herald. To keep the public ignorant of the xeal state of affairs in the Philippines is impossible. No one with a grain of common sense would suppose for a moment that the country would be satisfied to take its news solely from the president or the secretary of war or the general in command of our eastern forces. The reputable press of the country is the direct medium of information between the people and their officials, civil or military, and any attempt to shut the mouths of the correspondents ol reliable news papers will always be resented promptly and emphatically by the public. A small brazier, full of redhot char coal, was brought. Seating himself on the floor in front of this, the Arab pick ed out with a pair of iron pinchers a big lump, which he broke Into small frag ments, one 'of which he put Into bis mouth. Swaying bis body to and fro, uttering a series of semisuppressed groans, he munched the hot charcoal between bis teeth. When be bad re tained it nearly a minute, be spat it out and took up another piece. The opera tion appeared to cause him great pain He rolled bis eyes wildly, and at times the saliva dripped from the corners of bis mouth. Persians are said to be utterly cal lous to human suffering, but Mahmoud llt-y was so much upset that he got up and went out of the room. The prince, too, was visibly affected. To me the performance appeared a mere piece of vulgar trickery. By practice a man might easily retain a small piece of hot charcoal between his teeth In such a manner that it should not scorch his flesh. When the Arab had crushed some five or six pieces we bogged, bini to stop. He rose ami seated himself on the divan, remarking that there was no reason for any anxiety; that the opera tion was quite a simple one and could l learned in a few weeks by any nov ice. Despite bis placidity, I suspected that his tonjrue and lips were burned. I was therefore surprised to see him swallow a few minutes afterward cup of hot coffee and smoke a ciga rette, apparently without any incon venience. Gentleman's Magazine. READ ALL OF THIS. It may be a question whether the editor of a newspaper has the right to publicly recommend any of the vari ous proprietary medicines which flood the market, vet as a preventive of suffering we feel it a duty to sav a good word -for Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. We have known and used this medicine in our family for 20 years and have always found it reliable. In many cases a dose of this remedy would save hours of suffering while a physi cian is awaited. We do not believe in depending implicit? on any medicine for a cure, but we do believe that if a bottle of Chamberlain's Diarrhoea Remedy were kept on hand and ad ministered at the inception of an at tack much suffering might be avoided and in very many cases the presence of a physician would not be required. At least this has been our experience during the past 20 years. For sole by all druggists. MUSINGS ABOUT MILAN. Batch of Miscellaneous News From the Town oa the Heaaepto. f Milan, July 27.
