Gov. Tanner is fond of sneering at
the press, yet it is safe to say that had
it not been for the press the governor
would have announced his candidacy
for renomination at the republican

A year has passed' says the New

people stand by the bier of the brave

They look out upon a war-ravaged

differ as to the wisdom and the justice
of the ends which Mr. McKinlev savs
he had in view. Hut can there be

The republican love feast furnished
a good illustration of the condition of
the republican party in Illinois It
was made up of party leaders and of
men supposed to know the sentiments
of the people in their respective lo
