The official census of the city of
Rock Island is as jet unobtainable,
but it is expected will be within a few
days. However, it is reasonable to
believe from the population of the
county that the official census will
bear out the estimates of the city
and of Moline heretofore given in The
Argus.
Rock Island is 12th in the list of
largest counties in the state.

was tendered the happy couple
at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. S. N.
Conover on Twenty-third street. The
groom is a son of W. J. Pratt and a
popular salesman at the Boston shoe
fctore. The bride came to this city
fro in Fulton and is employed in the
Woodmen office. The couple have
gone to housekeeping at Twenty-second
street and Fourth avenue, where
they have furnished a coy home
and where the best of good wishes
will attend them.
Herman Schreiber, of this oity, and
Miss Henrietta Raniaker, of Chicago,
were married last Wednesday in Chi
cago. They have gone to housekeep
ing at 1011 Seventeenth street. The
groom is employed as draughtsman
at Rock Island arsenal.

will be the attraction in this city at
Harper's theatre Sunday, Nov. 25.

nished. Closely following the expansion of
the American league comes another
baseball organization which will
branch out and occupy the part of
the territory surrendered by President
Johnson's cohorts when the latter
went east for additional cities. Presi
dent Charles Stroebel, of the Toledo
club of the Interstate league, has sent
out a notice to owners of grounds in
Kansas City, Minneapolis, St. Paul,
Des Moines. Louisville, Dayton, Co
lumbus, Grand Rapids and Indian
apolis requesting them to meet in
Chicago within the next few days for
the purpose of considering the ques
tion of organizing a new league of the
central states.
With the abandonment of Kansas
City and Minneapolis by the Ameri
can league and the probable removal
of the club from Indianapolis a rich
lield was left for some minor organ
ization, and the practical disruption
of the Interstate league furnished the
additional towns to add to the nucleus
formed by the former American
league cities. New Castle, Wheeling
and Youngstown dropped out of the
Interstate Icaguo before the close of
the season and Anderson and Muncie,
which were substituted, failed to
meet expectations. There are several
good ball towns in Ohio, but not
enough to form an independent
league. These will be made the east
ern division of a strong league while
the twin-cities and Manning's old
stamping ground will be the western
representatives.
To Furnish Faat Ball.
Louisville and Indianapolis have in
years past proved good investments,
and in fast company, such as the pro
posed league is capable of furnishing,
they should ooce again be dividend
paying properties. Toledo and Day
ton are leaders in Ohio, while the
enthusiasts in Grand Ripids have
always clamored for a tirst-class team
in first-class company. Rock Island
has for sevei-al years been seeking to
identify itself with a lirst-class base
ball organization, stnd here is an op
portunity to at least investigate.
At the conference which is called to
meet in Chicago there will undoubt
edly be more than eight cities repre
sented, but it is the intention of the
promoters to limit the organization
to that number. Those which can
offer the best guarantee will be given
the franchises. While there are but
tivo or six cities considered for the
western division there may be a
dozen applicants from the eastern
section. Toledo and Louisville, with
Indianapolis, if that town does not re
main in the American league, are the
most likely members. The fourth
would be selected from such cities as
Dayton, Grand Rapids, Columbus and
Fort Wayne.
A league formed from the above
cities would be almost on a par with
the American league as constituted
previous to this season. It would be
stronger than any baseball organiza
tion with the. exception of the two
major leagues. The cities included
in the call are large enough to sup
port strong clubs with a minimum
salary schedule which would bo equal
to that paid many of the players in
the National league today.
