QEEAT OSOWD ON THE GEOUUDS Twenty-five Hundred Paid Ad missionsInterest in the Came. An ideal day for baseball was yes terday, and an ideal crowd wa9 pres. ent at the Twelfth street park to see the exhibition game between Bock Is land and Davenport. Long before Umpire Walt Davis said "play ball" every foot of availa ble space in the bleachers was taken and fans in the grand stand were squeezed for room. Every orack and knothole in the fence was preempted by 2 o'clock and hundreds of boys took turns in looking through or en joyed the brilliant features at second hand from the more fortunate ones. Rigs two or three deep packed the space behind the rail allotted for them and every foul the batters knocked over their lelt shoulder created a com motion among the equine witnesses By the time the game started the field had begun to till up inside the rail in front of the bleachers, and be fore it was half over there was a line clear around the outfield There were 2 500 paid admissions. The rooters were about evenly di vided between the contesting teams, showing that a large portion was from across the river. It was a live crowd, too. and chock fall of base ball spirit. In fact the very air seem ed to vibrate with pent up enthusiasm and every creditable play got all that was coming, which latter might bj said with equal truth of all plays that were otherwise. Davenport's Urcat Stick Work The result was all due to Daven port's heavy pounding in the first in ing, when the team batted entirely around and live scores were made Tate's men lost their heads in several instances and made errors that were costly after the first four men up had put balls into the Iield where they couldn't bo handled. But when Rocs: Island came to bat it looked for a time as though the visitors stunt was going to be equal led. Poor, who was first up. walked and Hoy made a beautiful three bag per, bringing him in. Thou Zink fol lowed with a 2 -base hit, stole second. went to third on Tate's sacrifice and finally sored baf jrj Lh si J) want out. In the second a wild throw over first base bv Hoy. a mud by Poor and other loose work lot in three scores and things looked blue. They brightened up a bit, however, when, after two men were cut Poor walked, stole second, made third on Hoy's safety and got home on a scratch hit by Zmk. Fox made a bad error on first and Hoy eame home. Uolb SldM Rail. Then bath sides bjgsn to play ball and the result was a nost fall of goose eggs, varied by a single run for Da ven port, made in the first of the seventh by Carriveau. It looked for a time as though the home team would score in the fifth and again in the seventh, but both times men were put out on third and hope died cf starvation. The splendid turn oat impressed upon the management the necessity for additional seating capacity, which ill be provided lust as soon as the attendance justifies. Tommy fclannigan. the pitcher, was sent a telegram today to his home in Wilmington. Ue;., that li he does not report for daty here by Wednesday he will be placed on the blacklist. J. he management is considering the making of a few needed changes in the infield. While it would be unfair to criticise the team this early in the season, there is no discounting the fact that tbe local inneld with tbe exception of the tirst baseman and battery was a disappoint ment. Rock Island is accustomed to a much better article of ball, and doubtless the management in time will strengthen up the weak spots. The Kewance team was shut out by Davenport Saturday, tbe score being 12to0. PREDICTS SUCCESSrCL. 8EASOX. President gexton's Statement oa the Eva of tbe LeaRna Opening. The Chicago Sunday Tribune prints a statement on the season's outlook from President M. U Sexton, of the Three-I league acco mpanied by a photograph of him. President Sexton says: The playing season in the Illinois, Iowa and Indiana league will begin this week. Looking back over a period of eight or ten years, daring which I have followed the develop ment of the nttional game. I cannot recall a time when every Indication seemed to point so surely to a suc cessful season as tbe present. The spirited contest waged by the two major organizations for the favor and patronage of the baseball public has attracted the attention of a great number ef people throughout the country and aroused the interest to uch an extent that all minor leagues will profit thereby. As evidence of this fact, recent reports showing that for the first time in years several cities in California leagues were obliged to turn people away from their parks on their opening day is only one indication In my opinion, the oomlng fall will find the affair-, of the baseball world in such a condition as to im peratively demand the formation of a new national agreement, constructed on somewhat different lines and giv ing more representation and protec tion to minor leagues, thus insuring a better and more satisfactory under standing throughout, and I believe it will do much towards secaring and retaining the confidence and good will of the puolic anl satisfying it of the good intentions of the magnates In their efforts to perpetuate baseball asj a national game. Healthy Baveball Sentiment. "Having been selected to direct the affairs of the Taree-I. league I am in a position to know actual condition-, throughout this circuit, tnd reports which I am receiving almost daily show the most healthy sentiment that could possibly be desired prevailing in every city in oar circuit. We have this year departed to a considerable ex tent from the methods followed in former years, and have adopted the percentage plan in lieu of tbe old guar antee system, thereby placing our selves, practically on the cooperative basis, and insuring to the smaller or weaker cities an opportunity to par ticipate in the receipts of the larger and batter drawing towns Toe con stitution has baen so change! tnd amended as to insure a butter compli ance with its provisions, aud iu addi tion thereto the representatives of tbe different cities have cheerfully entered into an almost ironclad agreement to adhere to the essential features re maining within tbe salary limit, play ing out the full schedule, prompt pay ment of does and assessments, etc la oar players' ranks this year will ba found many youngsters.1 and while some changes may bo necessary daring tha early days of the season, 1 look for a good fast article of ball in this league. If an amateur has the right kind of stuff in him he usually plays a mora brilliant game, and proves to ba a better drawing card than the old head who has struck his pace and seldom gats bayonl it. If the playing ru'es will admit of it. and I think they do, I wish to as sure the patrons of the game in this league that it will be my aim and de sire to at all timos have the different clubs furnish clean exhibitions, and under no circr m?tances will rowdyism or dilatory tactics be tolerated, and to that end I shall instruct the umpires to enforce the rules fully and im partially on all occasions, and in all aggravated cases I shall, in addition to insisting on the payment of any tine imposel, suspend tbe onenaer zor such period of time as as the offense seems to merit." Other Ba'l Uanies. Augustana in a measure retrieved the recent defeats suffered at Gales burg by taking a fall out of Lombard at the 'Twelfth street park Saturday afternoon. The score was 14 to 2 rho game was exciting throughout. The pitching of Gustafson, of Augus tana, was a feature. Tbe Greenbush Stars defeated the Seventh Ward Stars Saturday, the score being 15 to o. IN THE EE ART OF O. M. Babcock's Prophecies Island. Chicago The Tippecanoe club listened to an exposition by O M. Babcock on "The Westward Coarse of Empire" at the Sherman honse, Chicago; Saturday afternoon. The veterans showed as much interest as if they expected to live to see the falfillment of the ven erable lecturer's prophecies for Amer ica ana imnois. iwo great maps were hung upon the wall. Tne first showed the world, with a broad red streak across it from east to wost, representing the path of empire, which is always moving westward, and has now, according to Mr. Bab cock, about 'arrived in the United States over seas from England. The second map mixed astrology with the destiny of nations, and as it brought the subiect nearer home, it moved the club to increased interest. Then theheart of empire. IS STRUCK BY T RAN Milton Bingman, of Bowling, Col lides With a Peoria Pas senger. DBIVIfiTG 05 THE BIG ST OF WAY Serious Injury Miraculously Es caped, But Rig Suffers Demolition. Milton Bingman, a farmer whose home is south of Milan, came to town Saturday and imbibed more Bock beer than he could carry with pro priety. During the night he wa gathered in by the police to sober up. Early yesterday morning he expressed a desire to go home to look after his stock, and was allowed his liberty after famishing security for an ap pearance for trial. He got his horse and rig from the feed stable where he had left them and started home apparently fairly sober. Whether he stopped on the way for more liquor is not known, but he evidentlv became mixed ia his bearings and at E'eventh street turned north toward the river Takes to the Railroad Track. When he came to the Peoria track- on First avenue be turned hit horse's head west and kept to the south track At Eighth street be was overtaken by the Peoria passenger which leaves here at 8:05 and ws following him n the north track. This morning Bingman, Joe Jeukin and "Poke" Lambart were arraigned before Justice Schroeder at the police station for engaging in a fight at Fourth avenue and Seventeenth street during Saturday night. Bingman was appar ently the aggressor and Lambert the referee. All pleaded guilty to disor derly conduct, and Bingman was fined $5 for raising the muss, Lambert $10 for taking andue interest in the pro CHedings, and Jenkinsfl for being out in bad company at an unseasonable hour. Lambert's tine was suspended on his promise to leave town at once and never, no'er show his face here again. Ilia Uoal the Letter' "V." When the la to Horace Maynard, LL, 1)., entered Amherst college, he expos ed himself to ridicule and jibing ques tiona of bis fellow students by placing over the door of his room a large square of white cardboard on which was inscribed in bold outlines the sin gle letter V. Disregard iug comment and question, the young man applied himself to his work, ever keeping in tuind the height to which he wished to climb, the first step toward which was signified by the mysterious V. Four years later, after receiving the compliments of professors and .stu dents on the way lie bad acquitted himself as valedictorian of his class, j oung Maynard called the attention of bis fellow graduates to the letter over his door. Then a light broke in upon them, and they cried out: "Is It possible that you had the vale dictory in mind when you put that V over your door? "Assuredly I had," was the emphatic reply. On he climbed, from height to height. ltoenmlnc successively professor of mathematics in the University of Ten nessee, lawyer, member of congress, attorney general of Tennessee, United States minister to Constantinople and linally postmaster general. Tippecanoe club is nothing if not pa triotic to nation, state and city, and hence thd lecturer's demonstration of the future-dominion was' just what the members desired. Mr. Babcock showed that the nine teenth degree of longitude west of London runs near Chicago, and down through the state of Illinois, while the same degree east runs through Cal cutta, tho capital of India. The jane lion of this north and south line with the empire belt, he declared, gives Rock Island a "dead cinch" on the fu ture. From Hudson Bay to the Golf of Mexico will be the great path of commerce north and south, while in a triangle formed by Chicago, St Louis and Roak. .Island ..will rest the ing blossoms" off a century plant; but, you see.Tie wouldn't have a remunera tive occupation if be were paid on piecework. "Be not overcritlcal. Even the most ordinary sort of a genius can tell when the other fellow is making a fool of himself. "Remember that tbe young man, like the angler's worm, is rather better for being visibly alive. "Be careful In tbe choice of your sur roundings. Environment will do a great deal for a man. For example, flour and water in a china jug is cream sauce. In a pail on the sidewalk it Is billsticker's paste.
