THE An GUTS, SATURDAY, APIUL. 2G, 1902. Th iiietln of fue 1 is one which is of tlie freatest Importance wherever civilization nnl industry thrive. It is t.M'ci:illy inixrtsint where the winter are cold uri I when the wheels of in dustry hirr. The vigorous climate, l:irr Kiilat uu ami extensive in dustries, of this section furnish an outlet for vast quantities of cuul, coke, lime and cement, the receiving, shipping and handling of which con utitntes one of the greatest of the luisiness interests of this section. One of the largest coal shipping, re tailing enterprises ff the Mississippi valley is that of the Kmpire Coal & Coke company located on First ave- w. 11. CAUPEXTrcn line in this city. . This company open od offices in this city last fall, hav ing purchased a quarter of a block on First avenue between Seventeenth and Eighteenth streets where they erected suitable buildings and have improved railroad facilities for handl ing their products. The original Mercer County or fJilchrist mine was opened in the year 1H.S5 and is known as the Ciil christ Mine No. 1. In 1S93 the Alden Mine Xo. 2 was opened in the same locality. (lilchrist Mine Xo. 1 was abandoned in 1890 and Cilchrist Mine Xo. ?. was opened in the same year. The capacity of Alden Mine Xo. 2 'DOCK ISLAND county has the only state institution located west of the Illinois river in the state, the Il linois Western Hospital for the In sane. The act of the legislature authorizing the erection of this hos pital and appropriating $100,000 for its erection was passeil during the session of 1S94-93. being approved by Gov. Alt geld May 22. H93. The story of the fight that preceded the choice of a location is tif particular local interest. Under the creating enactment the government of the hospital was vest- ed in a hoard of three trustees to be apiointeil by the governor, that body to decide upon the location. The board at first was composed of lodge R. Eden, of Moultrie county, chairman; W. Seidell dale, of Gales burg, and T. S. Silvis, of Rock Island. J ii September of the same year Mr. Silvis resigned on account of failing health and T. J. Medill. of this city, was named to fill the vacancy. ' L'pon the reorganization of the board a battle between the counties composing the territory in which the institution was to be located was immediately begun to secure it. The act by which it was established re quired that it be placed west of the Illinois river at such place as should lie best adapted to the wants of the Institution and most economical to the state, having regard to elevation, water aupply, drainage, facility of access, quality of soil and price of land. It was further provided that the trustees on behalf of the state might accept, any gifts in . money, lands, or other property as an in ducement to secure It. Knox, .War ren . and Rock Island counties were tne most active in their efforts to land the prize. Knox county offered 410 acres of beautiful land lying near Western Hospital for the , Insane. TKq Mining and Fuel Hiridiustiny and Gilchrist Xo. 3 is 1,500 tons of coal per day and 500 men are con stantly employed. The mines are lo cated near Viola, III., on the line uf the Chicago, Iturlirrgton & Quiney railroad. The two mines are operat ed under the name t the Empire Coal company with Charles Schuler an gen eral iiiiinager. Chnrtes F. Alden, of Clinton. Iowa. Iieing president of the eorxration, anil .1. W. (iiletirist eo retary anil treasurer. V. II. Carpenter, the manager ol the local company, is well known In the tri-cities. having leen for many years engaged, in handling fuel in Moline. lie was for five years .' the senior member of the firm of V. II. Carpenter Co., of that city, his business associate Iieing Kiifus Walk er; of the present firm of Unfits Walker X- Son. Mr. Carenter thor oughly understands the business and is a pushing, enterpri-ihtg tnnii aild one who no doubt will make a signal success of the business here. The Em pire Coal & Coke company, of Kot-k Island, is comosed of the owners and oerators of the Mercer County mines in addition to Y. II. Carpenter, who has entire charge of the busi ness here. They. are exclusive agents for this celebrated coal in Hock Is land, where they do n wholesale and retail business, having exceptionally good facilities for handling their products. In connection with their handling of soft coal, they also have the lies! grade of anthracite and other east ern coals. This firm has been ap pointed sole agents for Koi-k Island for the jale of the 'celebrated tola Portland cement, a distinctly western product, guaranteed for strength, uniformity ami durability, and is used largely by the I'nited States governiiu-tit. More of this cement has been used by the railroads west of the Mississippi than all other Portland cements combined. This cement is manufactured at tola. Kan sas, and while it is not one. of the oldest, it is one of the lest known and most universally used in the territory tributary to its location. Last year there was produced and sold from these works 300.000 barrels, which was, used in all classes of work from sidewalks to the heaviest government railroad construction. (lalesbnrg. Warren county offered 400 acres adjoining Monmouth, or $00,000 in money. Rock Island offered one of two sites, 410 acres, which was fin ally accepted, near Watertown, or 400 acres in Hlack Hawk. After a desperate contest Rock Island won, owing to the proximity of the sites it offered to large streams, which is considered highly desirable in the 1 cation of state institutions. The site selected is beaut if ully located on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi four miles east of Moline. Immediately after the question f WESTERN HOSPITAL FOR INSANE. location had been settled Judge Kden resigned as member of the board of trustees and Mr. Medill succeeded him as president.' The vacancy left was never filled. The board adopted plans and began the construction of the hospital, the laying of the corner stone Sept. 5, IH'JC. being made the occasion of a great public demon stration in Rock Island and Moline, with addresses by fiov. Alt geld and other prominent men. Only, part of the buildings were completed when the term ot the original board expir ed in. March, 1897. The style of archi tecture adopted is what !s known as the Tudor-Gothic, which accords with that of other public buildings, of which thre were a number, erected during the Altgeld administration. . In addition to the sura of $100,000, which was at first appropriated to begin the hospital there has been in the neighborhood of $350,000 expend ed in additional buildings and im provements about the f rounds. There are now 14 wards complete and in use all connected and built ' of Berea sandstone quarried near Cleveland, Ohio. In addition there have been constructed , outlying building in cluding a power house, store ami eold storage building, laundry, ma chine shop, carriage barn, vegetable From 12.(XK) to 20.000 barrels of this cement, was used in the three cities last year on from the lightest to the heaviest work. It stands the tests und requirements of all kinds of con struction, and for sidewalks has no superior. It is manufactured in the west and is being used by the west in an ever increasing volume. The out put of the mills at Iola this year will be about double the output of last year. 'I he astounding increase in fhe demand is the result of the high rep utation it has made. In the handling of this cement fhis firm will pay special attention to the wholesale trade an.l, contractors. This firm are also agents for 'the sale of the well known Alden lime from the AMen IJnie company, of Clinton, Iowa. This lime has been on the market for over .'0 years and each year has seen it increase in public favor and amount of sale. Alden lime is easily slaked., summer or win ter, with cold water. It is n cool, easy working lin.e, makes a lasting mortar, and properly mixed with good sand will go further than any other lime in this market. A book of testimonials of the value of this lime will be sent to any address. They have just been appointed sole agents for the Monmouth sewer pi which is known as the very lwst article produced in this section of the coun try. The Empire Coal & Coke com pany is destined to make its mark in the local field, as it has ample capital and Ihe best facilities for serving the public. The Silvis Mining company con ducting tfie well known Silvis mines near Carbon Cliff constitutes one of the representative industries of Kock Island coitnty. The operation of the mine was begun under the name of Silvis Hros., composed of 11. S. Silvis and the late T. S. Silvis, in 1SS1, and by whom it- was successfully con ducted for it number of years when the Silvis Mining company was form ed with a capital stock of $10,000. of which IJ. S. Silvis is president and T. S. Silvis is secretary anil treasurer. In addition to the advantage of having a splendid vein with an inex haustible supply of the best quality of coal, the company has a mine equipped with the most modern ma house, infirmary and the farm barns. There is a chapel now nearing com pletion, a parole ward under way and the site is being graded for a ward for the female employes. AJI the sep arate buildings are of St. Louis hy draulic pressed brick with the excep tion of the barns, which are of wood. All the buildings of tiie hospital proer are lighted by electricity fur nished by the power plant connect ed with the institution and thorough ly modern in all other equipments All the wards are of fireproof con struction. 1 The capacity of the hospital is 050 patients and it is kept full nearly all the time. A party of 50 incurables were recently sent to Peoria "'but their places are being rapidly filled. To care for the patients and to look after other matters connected with the hospital over 100 men on:l women are employed. To maintain the insti tution the state expends over $90,000 yearly, the allowance Iieing $140 per capita. About 300 patients arc taken into the hospital each year and an equal number discharged from it. Dr. Warren E. Taylor becaiue su) erintendent in January, 1897. and has continued in that capacity since. His present assistants are prs. K. A. Soule and W. A. Crooks, who, like the superintendent, are of the home opathic svhool of. medicine, under which the hospital in conducted. The present board of trustee is composed of Frank W. Gould, Moline. president; Allen M. Clement, Chica go, and ItK. Munger. Princeton. Axel Kohler, of Moline, has been clerk and C. F. Lynde, of this city, treasurer of the Iioard since It was organized. - ' Diphtheria, sore throat, croup. In stant relief, permanent cure. Dr. Thomas Eclectric Oil. Mr. Silvis the elder is a native tif Pennsylvania, where he was born Nov. 21. IS.'!7. lie has resided in l!ock Island county since ls.14, and is regarded as one of the substantial men of the community. He is genial ami wholesouled in his nature, a man quick to win the confidence of those with whom he is brought in contact and one whose friendship is to be prized. The Rock Island Fuel company is one of Rock Island's most progres sive establishments, ami one that serves the purpose for which it was organized to the best possible de gree. William Huber. the general tnanager.was born at Heide, (iermany, in 1S.15, and came to this country in 1H72. first locating in Davenport. Six years later he moved to this city where he has continued to make his home. The Rock Island Fuel com pany was incorporated under Ihe NEW MEANS OF Independent Telephone rl Operation in The I'uion Klectrie Telephone & Telegraph company, which has ac quired the rights of the Illinois Inde pendent. Telephone company and un der the latter's name will build and operate telephone exchanges in Rock Island and Moline, is a corporation formed and controlled by eastern capitalists. N. Hamilton, of Harris burg, I'a., is largely interested in electric railways and ' electric light plants lx sides a number of telephone exchanges in other cities, .lames Reiss, of I'ittsburg. one of thosv who are largely interested, is a heavy stockholder, in electric railway lines in the east. Col. Morrison, also of Pennsylvania, and a I'nited Slates bank examiner, is interested in the company, and there are other well known nit ii. including some from Chi cago, who hold stock. The systems in Rock Island and Moline will connect with one to be installed in Davenport at the same time under a charter granted direct to the l"n ion Klectrie1 Telephone & Telegraph company, and the manage ment promises that nil three will be thoroughly modern in all equipments. Private service is promised, the new company giving assurance that there will be no party lines in the system and that nothing but copper circuits will be installed. The lines in the fire limits of the three cities will be cabled and placed under , ground. Free-service is promised between fhe cities and the country on all sides and there will be no toll collected between the twin-cities and Daven port. According to present plans new buildings will be erected for the cen tral offices in the three cities. A 2,000 line switchboard will be placed in Davenport,, one for 1.500 lines in Rock Island and'one for 1.000 lines in Moline. All these will be central en ergy, multiple action, boards. The instruments used will be of the long distance variety and all of the most modern and improved makes. Then construc tion will be betrun and pushed as rapidly as possible, th- intention being to have everything in working order by fall. The cost of the ma terial and work required to place the new systems in the three cities, it is estimated, will not be less than $:i(IO.- 000. Solicitors for subscribers are at work in all three cities and are meet ing with much greater success than was anticipated in the beginning. The number who have signed for "phones is well along near the thousand mark and the work of soliciting will be kept, up till the system is in opera tion. It is confidently expected that bv that time there will be 2,500 sub scribers in the three cities. Arrangements have been made with Ihe owners of independent lines by which connection will be had with all surrounding towns within a radius of 50 miles. There will also be long distance connection with Dubuque, Iowa City, and other important cities with which Rock Island people do business. The free exchange with the rural districts about the three cities will afford facilities which will be valuable in extending and facilitat ing their trade, adding to the de sirability of the country as a place of residence and consequently tend incr to increase properly values out side of the city. The entire system is to be com pleted and working in a satisfactory tnainer before subscribers will be ex pected to make any payments for the rental of their instruments. The present offices, which are in charge of S. W. Fitzgerald, are locnted in room 42 in the Mitchell & Lynde build ing iiv this city.
