Mr. Ilan- for:l bog's leave to announce that nothing- has been left undone to en hance the attractiveness of the de lightful old comedy. Kvery picture will be given its projwr setting. Special scenery has been designed for this production by leading 'ew York artists who have vied with each other to secure the best -and most beautiful results. Their efforts, it is said, have been crowned with much success not only mi account cf their extra exer tions, but also because the Italian at mosphere and the coloring of the period of "The Taming of the Shrew" readily lend themselves to artistic endeavor. The costuming1 of the play is on a par with the scenic ex ccllence while all the other appoint ments, properties and electrical ef fects help to make the production one or the most notable that was ever sent on tour. It is stated that every member of the company is an artist who has won his spurs in Shakes- ix-rinn drama. At the head of Mr. linnford's supporting company is the actress. Miss Marie Drofnah. con cerning whom so much has been writ ten. Already a great ileal of cur iosity has been manifested to si-c her in the role of Katherine. Other members of the company are Kmina Hay ner. Irving Knight, Koland tiib- TODAY'S MARKETS. Chicago. Mav 13. It is a well known fact that Man as;er Frank L. ltrley, whose great singing organization in "The Chap erons"'will be seen here this even ing, is one of- the most Uivish and liberal of all operatic producers of this country. The gorgeous effects in "The Fortune Teller" and "The Singing !irl" for the Nielson Opera company were wholly the result of his genius for dressing an operatic show. When it came time to produce 1'he Chaperons" Mr. l'erley turned over to the scenic artist photo- graphs and drawings of the famous Paris Latin quarter, where the first act is located, and Scenic Artist Jo seph l'hjsioc, who built the stngo settings for "The Chaperons," de clares that the models culled for the heaviest and most elaborate lur- ninshings ever sent from his New Vt rk studio- The designs for the costumes were furnished by the well known poster artist, Archie (iunn, and the original plates are now carried in an immense frame which is ex hibited in the lobby of the theatre wherever "The Chaperons" appears. The seat sale for the first concert by the Uock Island Choral society to le given at the Illinois Thursday evening opened this morning and the indications are for a fine audience. Aside from a chorus of 250 voices di rected by Prof. C. F. Toenniges. there are to be solo numbers by V. C. Se- beck, pianist, and Miss Harriet Crop per, soprano. The entertainment will be one of the season's musical events and deserves the liberal patronage that seems assured for it. SAYS THERE'S NO HARM IN DANCING OR CARDS The recent meeting of Methodist ministers in Chicago, when it was urged that the church laws prohibit ing dancing and kindred amusements iMiyht to be modified to meet modern ideas of the people at large, has aroused a deep interest among the Methodists of New York. That a large number of Methodist ministers ot that city oeueve mat the church laws against dancing, the theatres, card-playing, and so on. do mote harm than good is apparent. There is a large number of the con servative element among the minis ters, however, who think that a re laxation in church discipline would work to the detriment of morals. Kev. C. L. (ioodell. of the Hanson Place Methodist church, in llrooklyn. saiil Sundav: think that the sentiment among Methodist ministers is such at pres ent that a general conference might mend the chapter on amusements in the church law so as to eliminate the prohibition against siich diversions us dancing anil card-playing, which can by themselves be conducted in the most innocent manner. There is nothing morally harmful in these imusements if conducted in u proper spirit and under the sujervision of parents. 1 believe that all that can be done to make the social life of the church more attractive should be ulvocated. "I don't want to be understood as idvocating dancing and card-playing. but that the question (f doing so is one really of a person's own con- cience. and 1 think that there should le no church law against such prac tices. If a person believes he can be just as good a Methodist by partici pating in these amusements, why is he not the best judge? 'Young persons often conic to me ind ask my advice about going to the theatre. 1 answer bv asking the piestion, why don't you come to me and ask for something that will bene fit yoti? 1 never give a direct reply, but leave the matter to their own consciences. "A man must lead a fairly good life nowadays or get left behind in the race. He cannot dissipate without falling behind in business, and social ly he loses caste too. Life in America has indeed become what President Koosevelt calls 'strenuous. Only by working with all his energy can a man keep up with the march of pro gress, the standard of which keeps constantly rising.- If lie permits dis sipation or indulgence to sap his en ergy he begins at once to fall to the rear." Svlatle Rheumatism Cared After Fourteen Holds t'p a Conarrvasman. I have been afflicted with sciatic rheumatism for 14 years," says Josh Edirar. of ticrinantown. Cal. De Witt's Witch Hazel Salve prevents such con sequences. Kven where delay has aggravated the injury DeWitt's Witch Hazel Salve effects a cure. "I had a running sore on my leg thirty years," says II.
