"Jumping n doer is n highly attrac tive phrase, quite apt to make n tin gling In the buck hnlr of the tenderfoot who hears It for the llrst time. It la also Intensely satisfactory to the chap who nlwny has VA'vhn'v'e' 'before 'woo ing nature.' You may, ludeed. 'get n good shot in this way, and it Is gener ally the only way to see the grandest of all the sights of the woods deer runnlug through a windfall. To see the gloss' curves of fur curl over the lofty logs that He piled on each other in boundless confusion Is well worth a trip to the woods, while for hlni who loves the rifle us I do, more for what cannot be done with it than for what can, there Is no such target elsewhere. Bnt for the tyro who is dying to get that first deer, "Jumping a deer" gen erally means out of Right and out of hearing both. For the deer that goes olT to lie down after feeding does not go to sleep, but to ruminate and take life easy. Once in n sreat while one falls Into a doze, but almost always the head Is well erect and all senses keen for danger. And even If one is In a doze It may slip away without your suspeeti'ig its existence, for sleep dead ens little of the senses of this wary an imal. The man who "wouldn't shoot such au innocent creature as a deer" should by nil means see one getting out of u heavy windfall, while the man who loves game that eau get away can here lind the attraction of the woods at its climax. "Hunting the Virginia Deer" In Outing. The Ant's Toilet. A naturalist has been making ob servations on the toilets of certain nuts, and has discovered that each Insect goes through most elaborate ablutions. They are not only performed by her self, but by another, who acts for the time as lady's maid. The assistant starts by washing the face of her com panion, and then goes over the whole body. The attitude of the ant that is being washed, is one of intense satis faction. She lies down with all her limbs stretched loosely out; she rolls over on her side, even her back, a per fect picture of ease. The pleasure the little insect evinces in being thud combed and sponged is really enjoya ble to the observer. Philadelphia Press. The War of the World. We met the people going one way with tbeir arms loaded with beautiful flowers. "Whither do you drift?" we asked. "We go," they exclaimed, "to adorn the graves of our dead heroes." Later ou we met them with thelv arms full of bricks. "And now where?" we asked again. "To throw these at our living, he roes," they again explained, with pity ing smiles at our dumbness. " . A Startling Snrprln. Ver3" few could believe in looking at A. T. Hoadley, a healthy, robust black smith, of Tilden. Ind., that for 10 years he suffered such tortures from rheumatism as lew could endure and live. But a wonderful change follow ed his taking Electric Bitters. "Two bottles wholly cured me." he writes, "and I have not felt a twinge in over a year."
