AfllffiU TALES OF THEATRE Henrietta Crosman, who has forg ed strenuously ahead in. the theatri cal world in the la"8t -few years, her latest stunt beiiig to throw down the gauntlet to the amusement trust, ap peared in a sumptuous production of her new play, "The Sword of the iing," at the Illinois last night, at tracting a large and fashionable au dience, despite the uhfavorable com ment tf the Chicago press, several of the eritics there apparently having a grudge ngaiiust this plucky little wo man. Miss Crosman has in her sup port a most . capable company, the equal of which perhaps has not been seen in the local playhouse this sea son, Sheridan Block, as William, Prince of Orange-Nassau, and White Whittelseynas Edward Koyston, the lover of Philippa Drayton (Miss Cros man), sharing the honors of the ev ening with the Vtar. The audience was a most appreciative one, there be hi" several curtain calls. Miss Crosman won immediate favor wu.. her audience and henceforward is as sured of a warm greeting on subse quent visits to Eock Island. "Sally in Our Alley." another of George W. Lederer's successful musi cal gait ies, after a most triumphal run in New York city, will be seen at the Illinois this evening. The charac teristic display which one associ ates with the Lederer trade mark a throng of gay comedians ,a hit of pretty girls in choruses, dances and frolics, wearing ever so many changes of handsome gowns, disporting fluffy lingerie, and putting so much ".lin ger" as Mr. IxHlerer calls it, into their songs on the staere that both the gowns and. the lingerie are sure to be equally in evidence will not be found wanting in the forthcoming production. The heroine of the story is a voiinc New York I'irl of todriv. who lives on the East Side, or poorer section of Gotham.. She is pretty, vi vacious and unconventional, and has m some way been given the nickname from which the play takes-its title. Her father. "Izzv" keens a shoo. i where one can buy and sell anything and everything. Into this establish ment troop the various characters from the IJowerv or Fifth :ivimiiu who are concerned in the plot ami who incidentally furnish plenty of local color to the stage scenes. Here the fashionable contingent of the east, iieaded by Miss Marigold of the smart set. throng in search, of a green .-ilk dress which Mrs. Aiari gold gave to her maid, who sold it to the second-hand dealer, who, in turn, gave it to his pretty daughter. Sally. as a present, and in the pocket of which arc some love letters which the amorous and usually discreet matron would not have anyone re for the world. This, however, is but one of thefunnv incidents of the play, around which Mr. Eederer has evolved -a prettv and lolly a piece of nonsense and set in as brilliant a kaleidoscope of color as ever marked his old time days when fun anil frol ic ran riot at the Casino. The performance in Davenport last evening is highly spoken of by those who attended and a number signified an intention of coming to this side this evening to see the play repeated. It is the rule to make lavish prom ise for the coming musical attrac tions, but in "the visit of Sorrentino's Panda llossa (red band), at the Illi nois, Saturday matinee and night, will be heard something unlike the city has ever heard before. It may be supposed that there is nothing new in the band music, but there is and it will be revealed by the Panda Kossa. These 45 red-coated sons of Italy, with music born in the in, tiave si style all their own. Eugenia Sorrenti- iii) has been conductor of the band about 15 years and more than half of his players have been with him all of that time. Skilled men in the be ginning, they now present ensemble effects practically perfect. Thev know- their leader's every mood and they know most of the band's reper toire from memory. No other band in meriea today secures the same to nal effects, for several reasons: First Sorrentino uses trumpets instead of cornets, and valve trombones in stead of slide trombones. Why? Sor rentino, who makes a specialty of operatic selections, says the trumpet and the valve trombone come closest to the human voice. In excerpts from opera, the sextet from "Lucia," for instance, in which this band is superb, one has before him a great opera company the soloists, witn voices rising and falling, the chorus, and the orchestra. To hear these men play the sextet, is a new experience. Hear them and be convinced. Statuesque Madge Torrance has been engasfd by Manager Charles II. Yale to play the hero Carlos in the 21st edition of 'The Everlasting Devil's Auction," at the Illinois Sun- clay, March 29. Miss Torrance is a stately blonde of the English type, who is in direct contrast to Miss Lil lian Herndon a dashing brunette, and the Count r'ortuno of the play. Fur ther contrast can be found in the Ti tan haired" Miss Louise Sanford, the American b?auty Miss Alice Stoddard or the dainty Farisian type of Miss Borna DeYoe. In fact, in conjunc tion with the principal dancers, sec u nil os. coryphees and ballerine who represent almost every nationality from all parts of the globe, it is safe to say that the 21st edition of the "Devil's Auction" has established congress of beauty in more ways than one. Barney Gilmore in his sensational comedy-drama, "Kidnapped in New- York." is the attraction at the Illinois, Monday, March 30, and the patrons are promised a meritorious production from a dramatic and scenic point of view . Mr. Cilmore has gained considerable fame as an inter preter of Irish character, and in this new creation of Mr. Dooley, the de tective, he has won fresh laurels. "Zig Zag Alley" comes to the Illi nois next Tuesday, with the. famous Zeb and Zarrow trio at the head of their own company of ',',() people, all of whom are real fun-makers in their merry melange of pantomime, music ml comedy. "Zig Zag Ally" is claim ed to be the most original and a more elaborate production, of this style of entertainment than has yet been submitted to the. public. From the rise to the fall of the curtain, there is no end of laughs in fact, it is said to be one huge laugh from be ginning to end. The entire perfor mance is said to be full of novel ef fects, original musical numbers and startling situations. The panto mimic portion of the show is ex ceedingly comical, the costumes a- propriate and- the scenery unique. In fact, the entire entertainment is com mended everywhere for me gooil taste which marks its every feature. Those who like a good, clean.- meri torious performance, will be well pleased after visiting "Zig Zag Alley." ROBBERY!
