A Montreal manufacturing concern,
wishing to place an ord-r for st-el
bars, has, let us suppose, a !i 1 from
the company In Hamilton, Ont., and
one from a Pittsburg steel mill. The
Hamilton company should have a ma
terial advantage ia freight rntes, for
the haul from their mill to Montreal is
only about half that from Pittsburg to
Montreal. Yet the freight rate on the
Pittsburg steel is only '1 cents higher
than that on Hamilton stoel delivered
"Babbitt metal from the United
States Las been sold in Canada at
quite low prices recently. 4' to 5
cents, freight and duty paid, being the
usual range of the quotations.

This is cutting pretty close to the tariff
line. It is not unlikely that the trust
Is cutting entirely up to the tariff line
on sales in other parts of Canada or of
