Two Leading Firms Have Perfected a System That is as Nearly Infallible as How do Brad.treet and Dun get In- formation on wliich to base the ratings siren in their publications? For in--tancf. every man in Rock Inland who a.ks for credit in a mercantile way will of found to Lave a rating in Brad streets, and It is generally assumed the information to be had there is accurate. One man is tated as good for credit of 1 ,". another may fcave ten times that much." and still another may be marked "collect in advance of deliv ery. The tame Is true of every other Town in the country, and one wonders Vjw ail the information is obtained. It reiuiris a good deal of work. A re jmrter for Hradstreets tells a little alout the way his agency does its work. I ht or a-oxne other reporter for Brad streets conies to I lock Island at least four t:mes a year. On each trip they pnd neveral day in the town. What do these men do while here? ii nai incur- .inrn tiu Willi; lieit They keep busy all the time. Id tl jfirst place it is necessary to keep he a r-irt up to date. A year ago a man may have been t-ntitled to a good rat ing, and perhaps he got it; he may have had a bad year, may have lost money, a.-, often happens in business, so a new rating is necessary. Make Maleuaeat. To keep the report up to date, each house that asks for credit is asked to iwake a Ftatement once a year, more es peeially if the credit asked for is a large amount. Different houses close their year at different times in the cal endar year and there is an effort to catch many of them just after they have taken an invoice, for at such a time the man who keeps a good set of 'ook kr.ows just what his standing is. The statement the merchant is now asked to make is a more searching af fair than it was a few years ao. First, a detaHed Matenient of all resources is asked for. assets of all kinds. In this are included and especially mentioned the actual value of merchandise; the actual value of notes and accounts re ceivable: cash on hand and in bank; the actual value of of all machinery. Rates as low as consistent with security. is Possible to Make it J also of fixtures; the actual va,lue of all real estate, less the homestead. Then, if there are any other assets, a place is left to enumerate them. Then the full given and surname of each partner in a partnership is wanted, and there is a line to tell whether each is single or married, after which the net responsi bility of each is asked for. This is suppoosed to be a fair and full statement of assets. Then there is another page for the enumeration of liabilities. The items on this are: On open account for merchandise: to banks for borrowed money; to others for borrowed money; to relatives, em ployes or others for money left on de liosit not included aboTe; on real es tate; other indebtedness; how muci of the indebtedness Is past due: give details of any items secured by mort gage. Then the statement wants to know more, for instance, the amount of sales the past year; the insurance car ried on stock and on buildings; the names of those who on the records own any real estate that may have been mentioned; with what house the man banks; of whom he does his principal buying; and then they leave his several lirtes to be filled out with references. It will be said that this is consider able Information for a merchant to give up. So it is. but the rating agency is a confessor from which the devout mer chant will conceal nothing at least if ho is wise. Merchants now give the infor mation; they do so as a rule when they are asked for it. If they refuse there is a bad mark against their credit ratings that may play smash some time in the future. TelU All, If YIe. It will occur to some that it is an easy matter to do a little tall lying in making out the items of this report. Yes it is. but it is likely to avail noth ing. In the branch office, say at Chicago, there is a well paid force of sleuths whose business it Is to verify the items in the statement made by the mer chant. If there is the least thing to throw suspicion on the statement, the merchant will be asked to give a de tailed list of those to whom he is In debted and the amounts of each. Then these creditors will be written and they will be asked to state if the figures as turned in by the merchant are correct There will be a like investigation of :he items that go to make up the assets t the merchant. This work of verifi cation of statements is going on all the time and is pushed vigorously. There is more than a man's ledger page in determining the credit to which he is tnfitled. The man's sanity. character, ability and habits will be In quired into. In a town like Rock Isl and there is a local reporter for the igency, he is always on the ground, if the merchant is doing a long turn at high rolling he can be sure this will get reported at headquarters. Iteewriln of 'wurl. Then there are the court reports and mortgage records. The local reporter sends in disclosures from them every day; that is where they effect the cred it who has a rating in the agency. If a merchant here files a chattel or other mortgage, or if he transfers any kind of property, a report of the transaction is sure to go to the agency the same day. If there is anything suspicious about :he ierforniaiice. or if it is so big as to !ecome a pressing matter, information of it will be telegraphed to the agency branch office in Chicago. Thousands of men are engaged all the time in keeping these ratings up to date and as r.crurale as iossibIe. All of them are cxierts at the work, so one need not wonder that the results are good. The system is made a little bet ter each year, and we are about on the time when the only way to beat the credit ratings is to turn rankly dishon est suddenly and make way with re sources that should go to creditors. Men will do that very thing, and per haps the credit agencies will never get a che k on that performance. IN THE SUIIURBS. SHERRARD. Sherrard. Jan. 12.
