COMES READY FOR PRACTICE First Member cf Rock Island Team To Report Is Picture of Health. You can sins f the robin as the harbinger of spring, but a sign that has: blotted it out of sight is the ball player. When he moves you can bet your cookstove against the proverb ial tale of the gnu meinour. When the schtxd boy fans hear that a ball player has come to town with his bat their feet btgin to sweat anil they complain to their mothers that if the teacher does not fchut off the steam and open the windows at school surely they an: going to have a sick spell. That is how they feci even if there is a foot of snow on the ground. When word went out that E. J. (Togo) Durkee, a member of the Rock Island team, had arrived with spring's first day from his home in Charles City, Iowa, the boys did front somersaults on the way to school, and there was a game of marbles on every coiner where the sun had struck sufficiently hard to afford a dry spot. Spring has come. A''ininiill hy lit Wife. Durkee is accompanied by his wife. They are stopping at the Hock Island Ii.n--i nnti tltio n ft r, 1 . t .1 ,1 . . . t quarters. Durkee is the picture of health. He has been working during the winter and is ready to buckle doAii to practice on the diamond. He was with the local team only for a short sped last s ason, but he won a warm place umt-ng the fans. ! Kot k Island signed him after Ik? h f : Cedar Rapids, and for a time hewa.with Springfield. Durkee is signed wit h Rock Inland this season for utility man. While he is at his best on the infield, he is satisfactory in the out garden ; in fact, in a pinch Durkee will play any posi tion in the game, from pitcher to tick et taker. H'NISH IN THE ROLE OF HAPPY HOOLIGAN Popular Minstrel, Well Known Here, at Head of Company Playing City Next Week. Frank E. McXish, for years one of the topliners in minstrelsy, and who will be pleasantly remembered by many here as the director "of the Rock Island Club black face performance, in which he took part, three years ago, will visit the city as "Happy Hooligan" next Monday evening. He is at the head of a big company under the man agement of CJus Sun. Since adorning the minstrel field McXish has been de voting himself to character work, in which he has been meeting with great success. McXish is known on both continents for his "silence and fun act." The critics declare he is as live ly and as funny today as he' was 20 year;; ago. Years do not: seem to make any difference to McXish. He is still a boy, and always will he as long as he is able to shake his feet. SHORTER TIME IN THE SHOPS Policy Said to Have Led to Resignation of Delano as Manager. the Orders for sweeping reductions in expenses have gone out from the headquarters of the Chicago, Burling ton &l Ouincy. Nearly all the com pany's big shops are affected, and great discontent is said to prevail among all classes of employes. The fact thar the management ha-i striven to prevent the spread of un ionism since the big strike of engin eers on its lines some years ago is adding to the ill feeling. Recently the management ordered a reduction from nine to eight hours in the woiking time of the shops. The new order re quires the shops at Calesburg, Ue'ards town, Aurora. Lincoln and othei places to be placed on "five days' ra tions." This merns that henceforth the men will be permitted to draw pay during only five days per week. Half the men are to be laid off Wednesdays and the other half Saturdays. Men I : ! Dlm-hiirjce. According to the talk among the nun this order soon will be followed by another requiring the discharge of a large number of employes. In the shoo discussion reirardinir the matter i it t ni,i nr. rr.asn exists for cuttin- down the time except the desire of James J. Hm to entorce rigid econ omy. Like all other roads, the Hurlington lias suffered from the severe weather, and much of its equipment is said to be in poor condition, requiring full working: time for several months to come to place it in order. Owing, however, to the fact that Mr. Hill has; determined to operate the Burlington as economically as the Oreat Northern ' is operated despite the fact that exist-j ing conditions are different, rigid economy has become the order eif the hoar. !.ei! to Iletjuio- IteMfjrnatlon. SWEDES MUST OBSERVE THE MARRIAGE LAWS Those Evading The in Own Country by Going Abroad Held Ac countable. Notice has been sent to the Swedish legation In Washinj;t:m t!iat hereafter, all Swedes who marry in any foreign ;ot!ntry must et permission from their diplomatic representatives if they wi.;b their marriage to be legally recognized In Sweden. The action is due to the fact that, many Swedes have been going to near-1 by countries, where it was easy to get divorces, and marrying again, some-j times under conditions that would not be allowed in Sweden. When a Swede ' living in the United States wishes to be married and return to his native! land, he must apply for permission to j the minister in Washington, who, if. everything is in accordance with the laws of Sweden, will issue a certificate to that effect. This certificate must be produced when the couple returns to Sweden. Ia addition, the minister when ap plied to must publish a notice of th? application with names of both parties in a paper in the city in w hich the lega tion is located and also in a paper in the city in which the contracting par ties live three weeks in advance of the ceremony. This is similar to the bans published In Sweden for three succes sive Sundays in advance of any mar riage. Because of the great number of Swedes in New York, the consul there has also been given the right to ssue permits, but he is the only per son aside from the minister who has that power In the United States.
