GAMES TOMORROW. Cedar Rapids at Rock Island. N Davenport at Dubuque. Peoria at Decatur. Bloomingtcn at Springfield. The Rock Island base ball team and fans went over to Davenport yesterday afternoon and took the third arid last on tliat side with a score of 5 to 3. It was just like playing on the home grounds. The Rock Island fans were in the majority so they took possession of the grand stand and the bleachers, as there were not as many Davenport ers out as were over on this side of the river during- the Springfield' series. Happened ia Sixth. It happened in the' sixth inning. Dav enport started out by getting a score iu the first and took another in the third, and they held the lead until the time the Inlanders made up their mind that things had gone that way far enough. Everybody but McConnell went to bat that inning and four scores resulted. One more was taken in the seventh and then Davenport pulled out of the fire in their half, but there the score making ended. Trjr llnftrbe. Kor the first time in the six games that have been played between these two teams Hughes was allowed a trial against the Islanders. Seven hits were picked up, but he pitched a steady game. The errors back of him com bined with the hits helped to give the game to his opponents. Lundin was in the box for the Islanders, but he was up against the same misfortune that befell Hughes. The first man who crossed the ptate did so on an error. The ten hits were well enough scat tered to have let Ids opponents down with one score less. Webster and Iiurg made the three scores for Davenport. Burg was the first up in the first inning and he hit for two bases. Webster drew a ass and Crockett Hied out to Carlisle. Swalm found one that was good for a base, advancing Uurg to third, and he was allowed to score on an error by Ruby in fielding the ball. Webster made his first score in the third. He drew another pass, went to second on a hit by Swalm and scored on one by Alperman. In the seventh he made a two base hit and went to third' while Swalm was being caught at first, scor ing on another hit by Alperman. Kuuf in tbe Mitk After Lundin tiled out' in the sixth Carlisle hit one into right Geld. Ruby followed with one in the same place. advancing Carlisle to third, which al lowed him to score on the throw-in of Sweeney's fly to Reed. Wanner hit a hot one to Uurg. which went through him. allowing both Ruby and Lister to score, Lister having reached first on an error by Alperman. Wanu-er scored on Vandine's hit. The. score ia the seventh was made by McConnell. He was first up and opened the inning with a hit, and went to second on an error by Hughes, scoring on an error by Reed in fielding a ball from Lundio. The score: ROCK ISLAND, AB. R. H. PO A. Webster states that negotiations for another player named McGUvery have been in terfered with on account of difficulty iu getting his release from Denver. The Daveuport correspondent was so sore last evening that he failed to send the score of yesterday's game to one of the Chicago papers. A number of the enthusiastic fans clubbed together tbLs morning and bought each member of the Rock Isl and team a fine new hat in recognition of the good work that the-- boys- have been doing, lately. They say he is not hitting or fielding as well as he knows how. ' Davidson, too. is coming in for a strong welt, while Hughes, who was villified almost beyond rea son before the season opened, is now the Idol of the town. Strange thing, this baseball game. Springfield News: Thornton walked three times and got two hits, one a double. He was so elated that he thought he would take a Jab at Don nelly. On going out to center he let go of some sort of fling, and the little manager replied: "All right, all right, but if you was with me you'd last about 3d minutes." Mr. Thornton straightway shut up. Mo, PENNANT WINNING FANS NEEDED, TOO Davenport Lacks That Kind Bears a Lesson for All Good Baseball Cranks. Over in Davenport they are talking about that "hoodoo." Well, maybe there is a hoodoo but it is not a vague, mysterious something that the Daven port fans profess to believe it is. Man ager Hayes' hired men could explain it but it is not given to them to do much talking, particularly at this stage. The truth is, to win pennants it takes not only a team of good ball players, harmonious among themselves and well managed, but pennant win ning fans, too. Davenport hasn't the pennant winning fans. The town fur nishes three good lessons to support ers of the game who are earnestly try ing to help their team win the pen nant: It shows conclusively that when the whole town undertakes to manage a ball team it is pretty sure to make a botch of it; that it doesn't pay for fans to bulldoze players, and that when the moral support fails because a game or two is lost, the organization, however able and well managed, is al most sure to go to pieces. Davenport is guilty of at least, all these mistakes. Manager Hayes has always been able to get a creditable bunch together, but he has always felt obliged to listen too attentively to the advice of the self constituted board of strategy and the organization has thus jeeu undermined. Two years ago Davenport undoubt idly had the best team in the league. The batting and fielding records show ed it. The pennant should have been won and undoubtedly would have been had it not been for Rock Island and the same "hoodoo" that has begun to get in its work this year. Then, as now, the players were given to under stand that they had to beat Rock Isl and or no mercy would be shown them. It is needless to say that that spirit was carried out to the end and the team did not beat Rock Island till they were literally forced to do it through circumstances over which they had no control in the last series of the season, and they didn't win the pennant. Lack of moral support for the team was strongly in evidence last year and is beginning to be felt this season. It discourages not only the players but the management. What it did to the team last year is well known. Unless the unforseen happens it bids fair to do worse this year. There Is one difference this year, however, as between the Rock Island and Davenport clubs. Rock Island really has the better team of the two now and should under normal condi tions win a majority of games when the two meet. But in regard to the "hoodoo" no tion, it Is one that ought not to be countenanced among fans or players. While the element of luck occasionally plays a part it is never a permanent factor in determining the aspect of the percentage column. Good, consistent ball playing, and competent diamond generalship, backed by a healthy sportsmanlike spirit on the part of supporters of the game are what count in the long run every time. WARM WEATHER HELPS. t!et Hid ut Your Catarrh lr llyo uei Now. Everyone who has catarrh should take advantage of the warm weather to get rid of this annoying and dis tressing disease. The right treatment, faithfully followed, in May or June, will benefit much more quickly than in the winter and early spring. Do not try to cure catarrh of the head and throat by taking drugs into the stomach. It cannot be cured in that manner. The only way in which this too common disease can be cured is through a direct application that will kill the germs of catanh and pre vent their growth. Hyomel is the only known method of treatment that accomplishes this. It is the, simplest, most pleasant, and the only absolute cure for catarrh that has ever been discovered. When using Hyomel every particle of air that enters the air passages of the throat and head ami goes into the lungs, is charged with healing balsams that kill the catarrhal germs and soothes and allays all irritation. The first day's use of Hyomel will show a decided improvement, and iu a short time, especially if used at this season of the year, there will be no further trouble from catarrh. You take no risk in buying Hyomel. The complete outfit costs but $1, and if after using you can say that the treatment has not helped you, H. O. Rolfs will return your money. Quality vs. Quantity. Hard muscles and strong body do not depend on the quantity of food you eat. but on its perfect digestion and proper assimilation.
