Engineer Meade, who has charge of
the Kewanee-Prophetstown survey for
the Burlington road, throws light on
the enterprise which shows that it is
designed to-furnish a shorter and bet

and St. Paul. Some 35 miles would be
cut off and the tonnae of the Bar-
stow-Denrock line would be greatly re
duced in the event of the construction
of the cut-off.
OWNERS MEET TO PROTEST
AGAINST DAM ELEVATION
Say Much Damage Would Result in
Rock River Bottoms from Widen
A meeting of land owners on the
Rock river bottoms east of Milan will
be held tomorrow afternoon at the
Maple Grove school house lor the pur
pose of organizing to protest against
the proposed raising of the present
dam across Rock river which is used
to create a sufficient head for slack wa
ter navigation In connection with the
Hfnnepin canal. It is said that the
proposed elevation of the dam will
eaue thousands of dollars loss to
proierty owners for, while the gov
ernment pays for direct damage in
such cases it does not pay lor the indi
rect damages, which in this case will
be heaviest of all. These will result
from widened area of overflow in times
of high water and the nips ion of the
present system of elrainage. Owners
are interested as far east as the Colona
f t ry.
