Hepresc-ntatives of big nre insurance srompanles doin business In New York tratchotl a test recently of a new sys tem to protect buildiogs from flame In adjacent tructxire. The experi ment was made at the eighteen story Manhattan Life insurance company building, to 70 Broad wy. The in surance company recently added to its standplpe fire plant what is known as the Regan water curtain, patented by former Chief Regan of the Boston fire lepartment. On the eighth and fifteenth floors on the Broadway side of the Manhattan Life building three and a half inch pipes were connected with tbe city water system in the street. The noz eles of the pipes were split Into three tiny slots, so that the stream spread In to a fine spray. This system of pipes stretched across the front wall of the building made a canopy of water, cov ered the front of the building and ran off in great streams for a block up and down the curb of Broadway. The plan is to turn on this system should there lie a fire across the 6treet and thus obviate any danger from heat or from a leap of flame across to the Manhattan Life. A second canopy was turned on at the south side of the building, next to the nonfi reproof Consolidated Ex change. A third system protected the rear, which touches on the New York Stock Exchange's New street side. The only criticism made by the fire insurance men was that the force pump In the building, with its capacity of Unj gallons a minute, could not get wa ter eiiougli out of the Bioadway main to make a sufficiently heavy canopy. The fire insurance experts said that if there were pressure enough the Idea was an excellent one. Its cost was less than I.'0. The use of the canopy of water in theaters to drench a stage in case of fire was looked upon as practicable. Eying of Famine is, In its torments, like dying of con sumption. The progress of consump tion, from the beginning'to the very end, is a long torture, both to victim and friends. "When I had consump tion in its first stage." writes William Myers, of Cearfoss, Md., "after trying different medicines and a good doctor. In vain, I at last took Dr. King's New Discovery, which quickly and perfectly cured me." Prompt relier and sure cure for coughs, colds, sore throat. bronchitis, etc. Positively prevents pneumonia.
