QEATH COMES WITH FLOOD
or kock mver in wnuesiae.
A tale of heart-touching pathos
comes from Portland, Whiteside coun
ty, in' connection with the high water
in Kock river. Last week Mrs. George
Wilder, who lives near the old Port
land ferry landing, gave birth to a
baby, which from birth was ill. The
mother was also sick and the closest
attention of physicians was necessary.
The river rose rapidly on Monday, and
by Tuesday the house was entirely sur
rounded with ice.
The father was able to walk to the
railroad, a half mile north of, his home,
over the gorge and thence to Proph
ejstown, where he obtained medicine
for the babe and mother. But despite
his efforts the babe died Friday after
noon. The funeral took place. Satur
day," the father carrying the body of
the babe to the railroad over the ice.
wnVre. by means of a handcar, he took
it to Prophetstown, where burial tool;
place. The mother was, of course, un
able to go.
