In an attractive circular issued vby
the Burlington is the history of the
oak used in the construction of its twoM
new dining cars, the "Peoria" and the
"Hannibal." The oak was taken from
a mammoth log. nearly eight feet in
diameur. from tho ancient English es

Its forests wt re famous, and not a tree

a few years ago the necessity of Imme
diately raising money led to the sacri
fice of 27 of the largest trees, which

In cutting up this particular logther
was found a gate hook wi.hin 10 inches
of the center, apparently driven thei
seven or eight hundred years ago. and
- a slug bullet, such as were used in the
first match locks. From its position
in the tree it Is said that it must have
been there since about the time of
Cromwell. A flattened musket ball
was also found, it having apparently
been driven into the tree some .time in
the early part of the last century. The
ball penetrated three inches into tho
tree, and six inches of wood had grown
over the place where the bullet en

when the new Burlington train be

give the Burlington a daylight train
service between Rock Island and St
Paul. Definite announcement of the
ne-w service has not been made.
