The sight of several hundred people gathered in Spencer square at 0:30 last evening, singing and conducting a re ligious service, was indeed a beautiful one. and one that was quite strange in Rock Island. The vesper service was held in the square by the committee of the central district, though all of the young people's societies cf the city united there. There were present about 500 young reople and church members, and scores of pedestrians who gathered jn the square from curi osity remained with bowed heads and listened to the simple service. Sev eral hymns were sung, and Alexander Davidson, the singing evangelist, sang a solo. Announcements of various church services of the evening were made by Dr. W. S. Marquis, pastor of the Broadway Presbyterian church, and Rev. D. L. McNary cf the I'.nitcd Presbyterian church led in prayer. Rev. Tilman Hobson in a brief talk thanked the city authorities for per mitting the service, and suggested that the rven'ng vesper service be made .'1 regular incident during the summer. This i''.-:i will probably be carried out. it originated with Dr. Marquis. The young people were dismissed, and as 1 hey formed lines and marched to the various churches, they sang "The I HOT YOUR HEART If you think you have heart dis- S ease you are only one ot a countless & number that are deceived by indi jj gestion into believing the heart is affected. Wheeler, In the eastern district, epoke at the Spencer Memorial church, addressing as usual a large audience. It was necessary to open the tntire church auditorium and the Sun day school room to provide seating. "Falsehood" was the evangelists sub ject for the evening. Dr. Wheeler in the course of his ad dress called attention to the fact that we naturally connect certain charac teristics with certain cities. Daven port, he said, was thought of at once as a beer city, Clay Center as the chicken city. New York as the busi ness city, Pittsburg as the city of smoke, and other illustrations were sited. He did not, however, say just what connecting thought was attached to Rock Island. Speaking of the excuse presented by some that on account of their business they can net be Christians, he declar ed this to be a lie; that a nan, if in legitimate business, can certainly be a Christian. Work I.Ike liOfnv.r:i!i. Dr. Tilman Hobson conducted the central district service at the First Methodist church, speaking on the sub ject of "Death." "We must all appear before Cod 011 the judgment day, and ovi ry man and woman who rejects Christ, now is already condemned to everlasting death." said the speaker in opening his sermon. In the course of his discourse Dr. Hobson said, "Cod's greatest sermons are found outside of the rale of the church, particularly in science." In th's connection he used the phonograph as an illustration, lik ening the phonograph to the records of the recording angel. "As the phono graph records your words and spoken thoughts, so is every thought and ac tion recorded in heaven, and on the judgment day read forth in thunder tones for you to answer to." I '.t ample of Mo.teN. Many of those who went to the Me morial Christian church last evening were unable to gain entrance, every available seat and standing room be ing taken. Dr. D. S. Toy delivered a strong sermon on the subject, "The Choice of Moses." Dr. Toy took as his text Hebrews XI.. 21:27, in which the decision of Moses to reject the honor and position of a prince of Egypt is mentioned. He briefly told the story of Moses' life, di viding it into three periods, the first il years as a member of the house hold of Pharaoh, the next 40 years in seclusion and preparation, and the 4o vears in the wilderness journeys. He pointed out that Moses made the im portant decision of his life before the ago of 1". and Dr. Toy added, "You will find that in nearly ever case in the present day the decision to accept Cnrlst Is made before that age. The decision must be made, and it results either in glory or despair." IN THE CHURCHES. Grace Lutheran. The Acme society meets this evening with the Misses Johnscn, 135 Fifth avenue, Moline.
