The suace within the dams is not large compared with other coffer dams that have been built for like river work, but it is the only such tract near here. At one point on the river the dams enclosed a tract of nearly 40 acres. Now that the preliminary con struction is completed, the work on the lock will be commenced within a day or two, as soon as the interior sur veys are made and the stakes placed by the engineers. - This will be com pleted in a day or two and the work commenced Monday. Milton fell down at the most oppor tune moment after having his game fairly won, and when it was tjo late for his teammates to recoup. Dubuque has released Pitcher Cook and Kennedy, the utility player, who was with Bloomington last year. The acquirement of Kruse decided Mc Far land to drop both. Springfield must be about to release Cameron as Frank Martin has been signed for the initial sack. He is a Chicago amateur. Domsey Hughes, al so of Chicago, is being sought for util ity back stop. Notwithstanding that he has not been pitching this season, but playing on the infield for the Wichita team, of which he was manager, Milton worked in his old time form in the box until the fatal ninth, when the hits that counted were made. Manager Warrender of Terre Haute has released First Baseman Dumler, se cured at Cincinnati, and has signed Frank Quinn, formerly with Evans ville, for second; Strong of Mount Ver non for a tryout at first; Payne, with Evansville early in the season, for the outfield. Tommy Smith, the second baseman of Dayton, who was displaced by the coming of McKean, who is to succeed McKinley as manager, has been sold to Grand Rapids. Changes in the Three-Eye league were announced today as follows: Signed by Springfield, Frank Martin, first baseman, Chicago; by Peoria, Jos eph Lauder, outfielder; by Rock Island, Lawrence Milton, late of Wichita, and William Ousley, late of Frecport, both pitchers.
