pals. You can't fford to miss "It Hap

real treat of the season.
Feature of Field's Minstrels. The
spectacle, "Roll On, Silvery Moon," is
one of the many features offered by
the Al G. Field minstrels this season.
The scene, a typical southern planta
tion, is a novelty in stage efforts. The
old war-time darkey, his favorite fruit,
the watermelon, and a real live chicken
fight, with the barnyard fowls as spec
tators, are included to make the scene
more realistic. New scenery and new
musical numbers abound in the spec
tacle. Coming to the Grand. Buffalo Bill,
who is now in New York, has lately
been a conspicuous first nlghter at Im
portant openings. He was present and ,
attracted considerable attention on the
first .night of the new Hippidrome
show, and a week later occupied a box '
at tne Majestic theater to witness the
initial presentation of Martin V.
Merle's play. "The Light Eternal,"
coming soon to the Grand opera house,
Davenport. Edythe Chapman, who is
the leading lady of Martin V. Merle's
play, "The Light Eternal," has, during
her career on the stage, never been
concludes the performance. Though
the Elite was supplied with a first
class equipment of scenery when it
was opened, the character of the acts
being secured has necessitated the
purchase of several new drops and
scenic pieces by Manager Frledenwald.
These will be installed soon.
Of Average Ability. A company of
average ability played "The Convict's
Daughter" at the Illinois theater Sat
urday evening.
Included Gcod Music. The Prim
rose minstrels held forth at the Illinois
yesjerday, and played to good houses
at both matinee and evening perform
ances. The entertainment included
good musical numbers and clever clog
dances.
The Majestic Attractions. For the
week of Jan. 28 the Majestic theater,
Chicago, whidh is acknowledged to be
the finest theater in America, will of
fer a notable list of entertaining vau
deville acts. Buster Gabriel and com
pany in a one-act comedy, "Auntie's
Visit," will be the headline feature of
the bill. Master Gabriel was the orig
inal "Buster Brown" and appeared in
the same over 1.200 performances.
George Ali created the part of the fa
mous dog "Tige." Master Gabriel is
said to be the highest salaried Lilipu
tian in the world today. "Auntie's
Visit" is constructed for laughing pur
poses only, and those who wish to

GROUP OF THE FAMOUS AMLRICAN BEAUTY SHOW GIRLS WITH "IT HAPPENED IN NORDLAND" AT
THE ILLINOIS TONIGHT.
"It Happened in Nordland." This
merry melange of harmony produced
by a great cast of comedians and sing
ers, not forgetting the celebrated beau
ty chorus which earned such high
praise at the hands of the gentlemen
of the press of New York, will be pre
sented at the Illinois tonight. - This
musical etxravaganza rage is brimfull
of fun and not a moment passes but
that a laughing situation is given to
the audience. There are 30 song hits,
any one of which would be sufficient
to stamp "It Happened in Nordland"
as a success. The costuming is of a
most gorgeous character, and it is no
idle boast when the management set
forth the claim that it has attained the
high water mark of lavish expenditure
in this line. The production comes
here almost direct from Field's thea
ter. New York, where it enjoyed a run
of over 450 nights to packed houses,
and the production is exactly the same
as when presented there. The com
pany numbers over 70 people, includ
ing a grand beauty chorus of 40 pretty
girls and a strong cast of 20 princi-
anytliing else than leading lady in
plays in which she has appeared.
New Bill at Elite. The new bill
opening today at the Elite theater is
headed by the Mimic Four, a quartet
that receives a higher salary than any
other act of this character on the
vaudeville circuits. Besides giving
some very good quartet numbers, the
Mimic Four present a highly pleasing
comedy sketch, and their act is one
of unusual merit. Lynn and Una Wes
ley are also strong attractions in this
week's bill, in their comedy skit called
"The Girl from Hackerdam," introduc
ing remarkable character changes and
high class singing, with rare comedy.
A performance requiring unsuual skill
is given by Richards, the upside-down
dancer, who does a series of clever
dances on a table balanced on his
feet. The sotibrette and dancing team,
Darling and Reynolds, two sisters, fur
nish an interesting variety for the pro
gram, which Is completed by the illus
trated song by Miss Hilda Orth, and
the new series of moving pictures that

cludes such well known players as
George Ali, originator of the famous

is foremost in his line, and while he
has many imitators, he is equaled by

the children as well as the grown folks
as this tiny hero of little girl and boy

other equally entertaining acts, which

HEALTH OF WOMEN
. In this nineteenth century to keep
tip with the march of progress every
power of woman is strained to its
utmost, and the tax upon her physi
cal system is far greater than ever.
In the good old-fashioned days of
our grandmothers few drugs were
used in medicines. They relied upon
roots and herbs to cure weaknesses
and disease, and their knowledge of
roots and herbs was far greater
than that of women today.
It was in this study of roots and
herbs that Lydia B. Pinkham, of
Lynn, Mass , discovered and gave
to the women of the world a remedy
.more potent and efficacious than
any combination of drugs.
Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound
is an honest, tried and true remedy of unquestionable therapeutic value.
This medicine made from native roots and herbs contains no narcotics
or other harmful drugs and today holds the record for the largest number
of actual cures of female diseases of any medicine the world has ever
known, and thousands of voluntary testimonials are on file in the
laboratory at Lynn, Mass., which testify to its wonderful value. .
Mrs. C. E. Fink, of Carnegie, Pa., writes: Dear Mrs. Pinkham: "I
wish every suffering woman would take Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable
Compound and write to you for advice. It has done me a world of good
and what it has accomplished for me I know it will do for others."
When women are troubled with Irregularities, Displacements, Ulcer
ation, Inflammation, Backache, Nervous Prostratvnw they should re
member there is one tried and true remedy, Lydia E. Pinkham's Vege
table Compound.
Mrs. Pinkham's Standing Invitation to Women
Women suffering from any form of female weakness are invited to
write Mrs. Pinkham, at Lynn, Mass. Out of her vast volume of ex
perience she probably has the very knowledge that will help your case.
DANDELION
A simple remedy for liver trouble
and biliousness.
The liver is a wonderful organ, always at work filtering, purifying and
manufacturing: ingredients necessary to life. It is the central laboratory of
the body. It plays the part of a natural poison antidote. The poison contain
ed in the decomposing food and waste of the body are arrested by it and ren
dered harmless. The liver is the seat of n.anufacture of bile, a fluid that
keeps sweet the intestine and aids to digest food. Healthy bile is an anti
septic and when deficient or absent the contents of the bowels become pu
trid and full of poisonous matter. You can always keep your liver in a
healthy condition by using Dr. Edwards Comp. Dandelion Tablets or Pills.
They act directly upon the liver and produce a healthy flow of bile.
Both tablets and pills sold by all druggists, price 25c.

PERFECT THE LAW
Object of Amendments to Pres

UP AT SPRINGFIELD SOON
One
Proposes to Open Civil
Examinations to Citizens
Other States.
Service
of
MRS. MARY GREGOVICH
Springfield, 111., Jan. 21. Important
amendments to the state civil service
law, intended to perfect the present act
applying to the charitable institutions,
will be presented to the legislature
when it reconvenes tomorrow. The
proposed changes were drawn by the
stae civil service commission, and an
emergency clause is attached in an ef
fort to get the intended reforms in op
eration at once.
May Stir L'p Opponitioa.
Three of the new rules provided are
expected to cause more or less strife.
One gives the commissioners the right
to open examinations to "all citizens
of the United States," instead of con
fining aspirants to the state of Illinois.
This is especially intended to permit
teachers In schools for-the deaf in
other states to take the examination
in this state.
Another change of note permits the
commissioners to grant a discharged
employe a trial when in the judgment
of the board the dismissed person has
been dropped from the service without
just cause. Under the present law
there is no right of trial.
Dath to llonpltal Tramp.
Another' amendment provides that
promotions in the clas6ifiedi service
shall be based on the highest rating.
The "hospital tramps" are given a
death blow in section 6, which stipu
lates that "all applicants for examina
tion shall be made under oath on forms
to be prescribed by the commission
and shall be sworn to before any Jitt
tlce of a court of record, justice of the
peace, notary public, or other officer
authorized by the laws of this state to
administer oaths." It is further pro
vided that' "no applicant for any offlco
or place of employmenr shall willfully
or corruptly, by himself, or in coopera
tion with .one or more persons deceive
the commission with reference to his
Identity."
The power of the commission to con-
duct examinations is extended as fol-lj
lows: "The commission may hold ex f
. .. . .. ... . if
aminauons in any city or cities oi any
other state or states and may desig
nate suitable persons not residents or
citizens of the state of Illinois to act
as examiners."
Dwmt Apply to all Iaatltntions.
No attempt is made under the com
mission amendment to extend the pres
ent act so as to apply to all state in
stitutions, as recommended by Govern
or Deneen, in his message. The idea
of the commission w'as not to jeopar
dize Ihe present act by asking for an
extension in connection with the pro
posed new rules. ,t '
