Freeport high school won the decision in the inter school debate with Rock Island high school last night on the subject, 'Resolved, that the federal govern ment should have control of the great corporations doing an interstate busi ness, the constitutionality of such con trol being conceded." Freeport debated In the affirmative, being represented by George Green Aipheus Dresser and Oscar Ennenga. The Rock Island team included Nor man French, Charles Iirkin and Jo seph Kelly, who were accompanied here by T. M. Coen of the school fac ulty. The judges were Dr. James A. James, head of the department of his tory in Northwestern University, Dr. M. M. Quaife of the University of Chi cago, and Dr. II. 1$. Kennedy of Be loit college, Beloit, WJs, Are ;lven Ito-epf Ion. Rock Island did good work, and the decision was a difficult one for the judges to make. A reception was ten dered the Rock Island delegation by the Freeport high school literary soci eties at the close of the public meet ing. Had niflicult Slilv. Having the unpopular and more dif ficult side of the question, the Rock Island boys were not expected to se cure a decision from the strong Free- port team. They upheld their conten tions creditably, however. BASEBALL GOSSIP Lee Lemon has been traded by Clin ton to Freeport. Pitcher Ralph Lord has forwarded his signed con tract to Manager Rowland. Manager Bosse, who is trying to get together an aggregation for Kewanee in the Central association, announces he has 1C men signed and more com ing. Honus 'Wagner has purchased a chicken farm, and says he will not rejoin the Pirates in the spring, which causes Barney Dreyfus no end of worry. The Eau Claire club has joined the Northern league, Rockford having its franchise in the Wisconsin. The team, which was sold to LaCrosse, will be retained. Wilson Bering, schedule maker of the Three-Eye league, has finished his work, and copies are expected to be sent to the several clubs next week. Mr. Bering was waiting upon the set tling of the dates of the Western Trot ting association so as to avoid all con flicts. It is said the changes in last year's program will be few. There will be 140 games, and the season will start April 30 and close Sept. 13. There will be usual arrangement of holiday games, and all clubs will play every day in the season. TEAMS PLAY IN LYONS High School Basketball Five Meets ' Unknown Opponents. The high school basketball team left this afternoon lor Lyons, Iowa, where this evening it will play the Lyons high school five. The team departed at 2 o'clock over the I. & I. with the knowledge that they were to play a team of unknown quantity to local basketball enthusiasts, and the out come is awaited with interest. The team will play the regular lineup. Manager McCandless, Coach Victor Hall, and Clifford Hubbard, as substi tute, went with the team. Mrs. Young was For merly Connected with the Department of Elocution at the College. TEAMS OF STATE ARE TO CONTEST Baseball Championship Meet of Illinois High School Athletic Associa tion Arranged. Formal announcement was made to day by Principal H. E. Brown of the local high school, secretary and treas urer of the Illinois High School Ath letic association, of the completion of arrangements for a basketball tourna ment along the line suggested recently, and heretofore referred to in The Ar gus. The tournament is to decide the championship of the association, and will be held at Oak Park March 27 and 28. Schools registered in the associa tion are eligible to compete, and Rock Island will send a team to the tourna ment. The preliminaries will he held the afternoon and evening of March 2 and the morning and afternoon of March 28, at the Oak Park Y. M. C. A. gymnasium. If the entries are s' nu merous that 4hc preliminaries cannot all be held at the time, arrangements will be made to hold some of the pre hiuinary contests earlier on neutral floors. The finals will be held the eve ning of March 28. The contest will oe in charge of Athletic Director Tapp of the Oak Park Y. M. C. A., and he will name the officials to act at the games. The business boys' basketball tour nament at the Y. M. C.. A. has come to a close, with the Tigers in the load with a standing of .S00 per cent. The members of the Rock Island Gun club are holding a shoot this af ternoon at the range near the Watch Tower. The shoot will be resumed to morrow afternoon. Owing to the inability of a large number of the members to at tend, the affair was changed to an in formal shoot, and the event for a h.m- I quet will be held later. The pride of the stock yards admin stered a fearful beating to the speedy Briton, although he fell down in at empt to win a bet of $200 to $100 that 'e would stop Welsh inside of the limit. CHARTERS ARE IN DANGER Corporations Will Forfeit if They Fail to Send in Reports. Springfield, 111., Feb. 22. Six thou sand Illinois corporations are in dan- er of losing Jieir charters for failure to file reports as provided by law. Under the law, corporations are re quired to make two reports annually to the secretary of state: one, the so- called anti-trust affidavit, in the month of September, the other the annual report as to officers and business, be tween the first eay of February and the first day of March. Over C.000 corporations are still delinquent in the making of the February report. The penalty for failure to report with in the time required by law is for feiture of charter, with a provision (hat reinstatement may be had within one year, on the payment of a penalty of $20. Super intendent Vandiver of the state insur ance department announced yesterday that when the licenses of the Metro politan, Equitable, and Prudential Life Insurance companies expire, March 1, he will refuse to grant licenses forihe next year, because of the act passed by the last legislature prohibiting the licensing of any company which pays officers salaries of over $50,000 a year. EXPULSION FOLLOWS HAZING Faculty of Hedding College Ousts Three Students and Suspends Two, Galesburg, 111., Feb. 22. The facul ty of Hedding college, at Abingdon has expeljed three students, Ben Thur- man, Morris - Robinson and Lloyd Mc- Leish. suspended two others and ren- rimanded two young men and five young women. The action followed the hazing of Clarence Robinson, who was tied to a tree during the blizzard and almost perished. Another breach of discipline was. the holding of a dance, which President Mac Vey, in an address to the students, said was a violation of the rules of the institu tion. Dubuque for 90 Cent Gas.
