Chicago, June 15. George Siler, the veteran referee and one of the best known authorities on boxing in the country, died Saturday night at 10:30 clock at his home, 78C Forty-sixtlf street, from an attack of the heart. The original ailment struck the vet eran as he was walking on Madison treet, ready to depart to witness the Ketchel-Papke battle at Milwaukee. The. most . heroic- measures were used to prolong his. life, which were successful for the time being. Mr. Siler Was G3 years old and early his career w;as one of . the best kriown lightweight boxers in the coun- ry. He had been connected with literary work for nearly 40 years, hav ing handled a column on fistic lore even when he was actively engaged as referee. His work as third man in the rhig soon "brought him to the ront, and he was generally recognized as one of the noted lights and authori ties on the ring. ' In Many-N'oted Battle. Among the noted battles at which he presided may " be mentioned the Cprbett-Fitzsimmons bout for- the heavyweight title at Carson City In 1897 and the match between Jeffries and Sharkey at Coney island after Jeffries w'on the title. His last . official appearance in the ing was a year ago, when he rofereed bout at the C. A, A. and gave the erdlct to Jimmy Gardner over Jack Reed. Commenting on Saturday's game the Bloomington Bulletin says: Eng got his finger in front of a hot one Saturday and was compelled to re tire from the game. There Is a new leader in the per centage column today. Three straight wins by Springfield did it. A number of real fans went to Pe oria yesterday to pull for the champs. Though they did a good job they were at a disadvantage in point of num bers. President Rosenfield has a letter from Manager Cook in which the lat ter for himself and the team thanks the head of the local association 'for his interest in the team and the en couragement given the boys. The manager speaks of , the handicaps of the present trip, one cf the chief ones being lack of hotel accommodations. When the team arrived at Peoria on the way down they found all hotels filled and took an interurban to Bloom ington, where conditions were no bet ter '"It was necessary to rustle out and find boarding houses in the early hours of the morning. The conditions at Peoria for the present engagement may be imagined with, tnousanas oi Woodmen in the city. It Is a wonder the team has been able to play such consistent ball under the circum stances.
