THE ARGUS, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 1908. 3 START THE MUSIC Baseball Magnates in Session at Chi cago Open Fight on Mooted Questions. WILL TAKE ANOTHER DAY Number of Players Disqualified for Meeting the Logan Squares Penalties Not Imposed. Mino' league presidents and club owners, to the number ! 118, met at the Auditorium Annex at Chios t-o yes terday .11 their annual conclave, start ed a few scraps and will continue lhetr battles today. The efforts of the1 American association and Kabtern league to force legislation upon the representatives of the oilier 'J5 leagues waxed too hot to handle and two amendments to the constitution of the National .'Association of Professional Baseball Leagues were referred to .a committee. The national commission at the same time was holding a meeting in the office of President .loiiusou of the American league, hut the deliberations of that body were lacking it tlu spice which chaiacterized the session of the minors, ruled over by hairman Pat Powers. Ito.-inl in ScsmIoo. The hoard of arbitration of the na tional association openel tfle day's ex ercises by a ruling in the cases of several players who risked their good standing in organized bail by playing against ineligibles. A dozen members of the .Minneapolis team and four of the Milwaukee players were placed on the suspended list for playing against the "outlaws" on the local semi-pro teams. Likewise, 17 players were given the same treatment for piaying with the California State league, which is with out the pale. Xo penalty was attached in any case, but each player will hear his fate when he applies for reinstate ment, which he must do before he may rejoin his team in the spring. HIk Figures Given. Over C.500 players' contracts were recorded with the secretary during the year aud 10,500 official bulletins sent out. Over $250,000 was received in transit for purchased and drafted players during the year. Of this sum over $107,000 was for purchased play ers, over $10,000 for options exercised and over $103,0(HV for drafted players. The total number of players drafted by the National league from minors this season was 43 and by the Ameri can league 07. The financial report was submitted to an auditing commit tee composed of W. H. Lucas of the Pacific Northwest league. Dr. Carson of the Central league and C. H. Mor ton of the Ohio and Pennsylvania league. . . The case of President Wolfe of the Spokane .-club occupied little time. This magnate was asked do substan tiate charges he had made in western newspapers against ' Umpire -.Fray" of his league, accusing him of associa tion with gamblers. Xo proof of the charges leing forthcoming, the board declared the club owner tarred from organized baseball. Pitchy- Bill I.cliveH, we.lf known in the Three-Eye league, was awarded to Mobile. His services were also claimed by Little Rock. Cal Kwing, M. H. Sexton and Joe O'Brien were appointed as a commit tee to draw up resolutions on the death of "Father" Chadwitk and T. J. Bryce, who owned the Columbus club. TIGHE ARRIVES TO PREPARE FOR SEASON Manager and His Wife Come from East Jack Says Limiting of Salary Will Not Hurt. As soon as this important iask is out of the way Jack will get ousy on lining up material for the Islander squad for next year. Tighe has no fears that the limiting of the salary . will lower the class of ball in the league in any way and he is confident that this city will be represented by as good a team as they have ever had. Mr. and Mrs. Tighe aro both in fine health and looking woil. They will make their home here as long as Tighe is manager of the team. Be as careful as you can you will occasionally take cold, and when you do, get a medicine of known reliability, one that has an established deputation and that is certain to effect a quick cure. Such a medicine is Chamber- Iain's Cough Remedy. It has gained a world wide reputation by its remark able cures of this most common ail ment, and can always be depended upon. It acts on nature's plan, re lieves Ihe lungs, aids expectoration, opens the secretions and aids nature in restoring the system to a healthy con dition. During the many years in which it has been in general use we have yet to learn of a single case of cold or attack of the grip having re sulted in pneumonia when this remedy was used, which shows conclusively that it is a certain preventive of that dangerous disease. Chamberlain's Cough Remedy contains no opium or other narcotic and may be given as confidently to a baby as to an adult. For sale by all druggists. The game which the Independents had scheduled with Peoria Sunday has been canceled and from present indi cations -the local team will not ilay again this year. Several of the mem bers of the team are out of the city and two more will be unable to play again this year on account of sickness and injuries so that it has been de cided to disband. The Independents have the record of having passed through the season without a single defeat and for the first time have landed the tri-city championship for the city. The boys hava played a re markably good game considering the little practice and coaching they were able to get and it is all the more to their credit that they were able to win from teams that put in from three to five nights a week in practice. They will probably be organized early next year and in that case an effort will be made to get in line for the state independent championship. Moline Team I May Here. Although the Independents will play no more this year still there will be a game at the park next Sunday, and a good one at that. Th-3 West Ends, who held the Independents to the low score of 4 to 0, will meet the team from Spring Valley, which defeated the East Ends of Moline earlier in the season. The West Ends are expecting to beat the visitors and a fast game is anticipated. The frame will be played at the Island City ball park be cause the park in Molina will be taken that day by the East Ends, who have a game scheduled. San Fran Cisco and Denver recently began coin ing a new five dollar gold piece struck on ajdifferent plan from any hereto fore coined in the world. It follows an idea expressed to President Roose velt by Dr. William Sturgis Bigelow of Boston that to permit the coins being piled to a uniform height a high or strong relief might be obtained by de pressing the design below the field or face of the coin instead of raising It above, as usual In all coining opera tions. This would provide a flat field and a uniform thickness, the fiat surface taking the wear and protecting the re lief, the shape of the depression fol lowing the outline of the relief. The same design will be used on the $2.50 pieces, and all will bear "In God We Trust." While never npplled to coins, the countersinking relief is one of the old est forms of sculpture in stone. MOLINE ONE AHEAD Records of High School Football Games Since 1899 Show It's Rock Island's Turn. HONORS HAVE BEEN EVEN Except for Fact That Plow City Took an Extra One Last Season In terest Is Intense. oooooooooooooooooooooooooo : i It is without doubt the turn of the local high school to win the game from Moline when they meet next Saturday on the field of battle and fight their annual game for the championship of the three cities. Records of the results of the games played by the two schools for the last 10 years show that the teams have kept the number of games won about even, but that the maroon and white is now a game ahead of the crimson and gold. Two out of the last nine games have been ties, three were victories for Rock Island and the other four were won by Moline. Since 1903 the teams have alternated their victor ies until last year, when Moline was unkind enough not to allow Rock Is land to win when its turn came, and (he result is that the maroon players have an advantage of one game in their favor. Henry Lyman, who acted as umpire In the Moline Rockford game, will again serve in that capacity, and the referee will be secured from the University of Iowa. The local school is entitled to select the referee, but , just who he will be has not been decided yet. The head lines man will be chosen from the Daven port high school. The game-is the chief topic of con versation on the lips of nearly ail the residents of the twin-cities, and had it come two weeks earlier one might never have learned from others that there was a general election at hand. Football receives all the attention, and from indications both teams will be followed to the gridiron by enormous crowds. The rooting will be some thing great this year, but as the best of feeling prevails between the two schools and their followers, nothing more than a fine exhibition of football is anticipated. Moline In Recovering;, Both teams will be in the pink of condition when they line up for the kick off. Moline players are rapidly recovering from their hard knocks and bruises received in the Rockford game, and Rock Island had no game last Sat urday, so their physical condition is well nigh perfect. Dope on the game is scarce, and it is practically a toss-up which side will win. nochford VK. Urbana. Rockford high school and Urbana high school are to battle for the state championship Thanksgiving. Rock ford has a clear title in the northern part of the state and the same is true of Urbana in the southern and central part of the state. The interest of local fans of the game is increased by the fact that the Urbana team was coach od last year by Ralph MacManus, who at that time was teachhur manual training in tne high school (here. All but one of this year's aspirants to the championship honors were on the team last year and seven of the boys had never seen a game before they came under MacManus training. For three seasons until last year the school had not won a game but last year the spell was broken and a ma jority of the games played were won. MacManus claimed last, year that the Urbana boys had the stuff In them and that a year's training would make them as good as any in tha state and his statement is being justified.
