This yeatvXor the first time the Nobel
prize for literature has been awarded
to a woman, Miss Selma Lagerlof, the
Swedish writer. The prize is a purse
of $40,000 and is awarded by the
Swedish academy, which is composed
of eighteen members.
Mrs. Velma Swans ton Howard, who
is the translator of Miss Lagerlof s
works and lives in New York city, said
that this is the first time that the No
bel literary prize has ever been award
ed to one of her compatriots aud that
there was great satisfaction through
out Sweden on account of it. Mrs.
Howard is a personal friend of Miss
Lagerlof, knows her in her homo life
and is rejoiced at this recognition of
Beloved by Her Countrymen.
"Miss Lagerlof is, of course, greatly
beloved throughout all Sweden," she
said. "Last year her countrymen cele
brated ber fiftieth birthday In a na
tional festival attended by scientists
and statesmen and members of the
clergy and the king himself. All were
delighted to do her honor.
"But MIhs Lagerlof has always tak
en prizes for literary work. Two years
ago the University of TJpsala gave her

the laurel wreath was placed upon her
brow in the cathedral where she stood
directly beneath the tablet of Linnaeus,
father of botany. Then on another oc
casion she won a literary prize of a
large sum of money from a magazine.
"While Miss Lagerlof has been a suc
cessful writer for many j-ears, it is her
recent work. The Adventures of Nils,'
which was adopted as a text book by
the National Teachers association and
is now in use In the folk schools of
Sweden, that carried her intimately
into the homes of her countrymen. It
was recognized that she had recreated
geography and natural history ami had
revealed to the child heart the won
ders of nature, combining the aesthetic
and the practical in a way previously
undreamed of. The sfory is a fairy
tale in which are tucked away won
derful nuggets of information and la
Interesting to youns and old alike.
"Miss Lagerlof is a little woman
with fair hair and expressive blue eyes
and a gentle presence. She gives read
ings from her own writings in a rich
contralto voice, makes no gestures, but
reveals all that she means through the
inflection of her voice. She is most
unassuming and modest in manner and
unconscious of herself, appreciative
and quick to see merit in others.
Shrinks From Society.
"After our first meeting, when 1
spent several hours in hor society, I
was suddenly impressed with the fact
that she had not once referred to her
self,. She shrinks from society and
spends most of her time in her country
home, miles away from every one, and
there she devotes herself to her work.
"She was thirty years old before she
began to write. Her father, who is not
now living, was an army oticerand
her mother's brother. Christian Wall-
ruth, is a celebrated landscape painter.
Miss Lagerlof 13 a graduate of the
Teachers' college of Stockholm and
was for a few years a teacher. She
lives along with her mother this win
ter in Dalecarlia.
"Miss Lagerlof, while a thinker and
writer along spiritual lines, is not al
lied to any religious sect. She is dis
tinctly uonsectarian, but that she must
be an apostle of the so called new
thought is apparent from the symbolic
quality that creeps into all of her
writings. Her 'Christ Legends' are
rich in symbolic reference to the spir
itual side of life. Some of her other
books are 'Jerusaleni, 'The Miracles
of the Antichrist,' 'Invisible Links'
and 'Gosta Berling.'
Idealist and an Optimist.
"She is a suffragist and Is a member
of the Frederica Bremer association,
a powerful woman's club for social
betterment and the enfranchisement of
woman. While as a writer she Is an
idealist and an optimist, I do not wish
to give the idea that she does not
deal with practical subjects in -i prac
tical manner. Her book 'Jerusalem,'
for example, was written after she
had Journeyed to the orient to investi
gate the conditions of the Swedish
peasants who had emigrated there and
were said to be treated badly.
"She depicts life as it is. but the
sentiment is always uplifting. Iler
work has revolutionized Swedish lit
erature. She has lived in Italy, Sicily
and the Holy Land, and the 'Christ
Legends' are the outcomeof material
gathered in Egypt and in the libraries
of Constantinople and of the Vatican."
