Many shafts have been oper ated at one time or another, in the vicinity of that town, but April 1 the last one of these will be closed, when the Atlas Coal company goes out of business. The Herdien Coal company, of which. Peter Herdien was the head, was the pioneer coal mining concern of the region. It began in 1880 when prospects were exceedingly bright for this industry. From 1880 till 1885 the business was very heavy, and all through the decade of 1S80 to 1890. it was good, but since that time there has been a gradual failure which it was realized would lead sooner or later to complete abandonment of the mines. In 1884 and 1885 the company oper ated three or four shafts and em ployed about 200 men. Fijom 1SS0 to 1890 it was common for tne company to ship 10 to 15 cars of cpal daily. The Atlas Coal company, which was organized in 1S90, has worked about 20 shafts and the old Herdian com pany exhausted about 10 mines, mak ing a total of about 35 mines which have been worked within a radius of two miles of Galva. From a total rf 200 miners who once were employed there, the industry has decreased to where only 30 men are employed. Rheumatism Cured tn a Day. Dr. Detchon's Relief for Rheuma tism and Neuralgia radically sures in one to three days. Its action upon the system 's remarkable and mysterious. It removes at once the cause and tha disease immediately disappears. The first dose greatly benefits. 73 cent and $1. Sold by Otto Grotjin. 1501 Second avenue.
