Smash Windows.
The Pacific saloon at 3104 Fifth ave
nue, run by Otto Berner, was broken
Into early this morning: and the cash
register taken from, the place and rob
bed. The burglars entered 'through a
window In the rear by breaking out a
. pane of glass. The rear door was then
unlocked from the inside, and the reg
ister, weighing close to 200 pounds,
was carried out in the alleyway behind
the building. The register was not
locked, as there were only a few dollars
of stamp money in it. The cash draw
er was easily opened, but lnsideof this
was another drawer which opens only
when a certain button is pressed. Ap
parently the burglars were not well
posted on the workings of the register,
because they were unable to fathom
the opening of this second drawer, and
supposing there was money in it, they
finally broke it open, only to be dis
appointed. . Damage Nominal.
When the bartender opened the sa
loon this morning he discovered that
the cash register was missing. Later
on it was found in the alley, apparent
ly in a dilapidated condition. A Care
ful examination showed, however, that
the damage to the register will not .ex
ceed $10. The police have been noti
fied of the burglary and they are hunt
ing for a clew, but the robbers left no
traces behind them as to their identity.

THE WORD "GOWN."
It First Cam Into Us In th Four
teenth Century.
Female costume in the tenth century
was classical in its simplicity. The
women wore long, loose, flowing skirts
reaching to the feet and a draped
"cote," or upper garment Chaucer, who
died in 1400, when Henry IV. was king,
frequently uses the word cote. In the
"Canterbury Tales he depict the ser-geantat-law
as 'wearing a "medley
eote, which no doubt means a coat
of many colors, while the miner be
describes as wearing "a whyte cote."
It was In the fourteenth century that
the word "gown" first came Into use.
An anonymous . author In no- mfid

his days. He writes that -"the com
