School is Keeping. The fall session
of the Davenport high school opened
yesterday morning with a large at
tendance. There were about 160 new
pupils enrolled, this being the largest
enrollment of freshmen the high school
has ever witnessed.
Ten Cases of Contagion. Ten cases
of contagion are reported as being- in
the city. Of this number there ere
eight cases of scarlet fever and two
cases of diphtheria.
Choked Man Who Snored. Police
court was supplied with a little humor
Monday when Joe Howdevitch and
Tom Vogrensodel were tried on charg
es of disturbing the peace. Vogrenso-
del claimed that while he was asleep, j
Howdevitch choked him. Howdevitch, j
in explaining his side of the case, told i
the court that his companion was snor- j
liig vociferously arid that he had to
exert violence to bring about a cessa- '
tion of the unwelcome noise. Both
Shoplifter is Jailed. A sentence of
15 days at the house of detention was
given Margaret Eartman when she was
tried in police court on a charge of
shoplifting. It is alleged that last Sat
urday night she entered the Fair store
and was caught in the act of taking a
piece of cut glass and some lingerie.

that Henry Claussen i3 no better. He
is still uncon.scious and it is said that

Obituary Record. Mrs. Hilda Char
lotte Westlund passed away Monday
afternoon at 4:15 o'clock at her home.
2018 Brown street, at the age of 34
years. She was born in Xorrk oping.
Sweden, Dec. 19, 1877, and came to
America and direct to Davenport in
1894. She was married April 15, 1897,
in Davenport, to A. N. Westlund. who
survives her. She is also survived by
two sons, Irad and Clifford, and by her
father and several brothers and sisters
The body of William Anderson, a
former resident of Davenport, was
brought to this ci:y yesterday from
Holstein, Iowa, for incineration. He
died at his home near Holstein Sun
day morning at the age of 56 years.
He was born in Chicago May 6, 1S35,
and came to Davenport with his par
ents, when small, where he was rear
ed and obtained his education. He was
married in Scott county in 1877 to
Miss Dora Gries, who survives. He
also leaves five children, Emma, Gus
tav, Louis. Anna and Eddie, and a
number of other relatives. Including
three sisters, and one brother, Richard
Andersen of this city.

New City Physician, The resigna
tion of Dr. A. H. Arp a health com
missioner, of Moline was read in the
city commission yesterday morning
and accepted. A few minutes later the
commission gave unanimous confirma
tion to Commissioner E. L. Eastman's
appointment of Dr. Perry Weasel to be
city physician, the name by which the
office of health commissioner Is now
known. Dr. Wesseirs salary, as fixed
by ordinance, will be $300 per annum,
which is $100 less than the remunera
tion received by Dr. A, H. Arp during
the four years he held the position.
Two Held for Robbery. Edward
Tremble, colored, and John Stafford
were held to the grand Jury yesterday
forenoon In Police Magistrate Gustaf
son's court on charges of robbery.
Bonds of each were placed at $1,000.
The complainants In the case were
HJalmar Johnson and John Pearson.
They allege that they were held up
and robbed of three bottles of near
beer, a pint of whisky and $1.80 In
money. The robbery occurred Sunday
night at Third avenue and Nineteenth
Decide of) Tax Levy. An ordinance
specifying the amount of the annual
tax levy of the municipality was pre
sented at the city commission meeting
yesterday mornlug by C. V. Johnsdn,
commissioner of finance. Following Us
Initial reading the ordinance was laid
over till next Monday. Provision is
made In the proposed ordinance for a
general tax levy of $134,480.21. This
is approximately $3,000 more than was
included In the tax levy ordinance
adopted kt this time last year. When
It Is taken into consideration, however,
that assessed valuations In Moline, on
both personal and real estate, are
higher than was the case in 1910, It may
be plainly seen that, despite the in
crease In the size of the levy, the tax
rate for 1911 will not be so large as
