SHERRARD YOUTH KICKED TO DEATH Charles Sass, Jr., of Sherrard. driv er in one of the mines in Mathersville, was killed yesterday morning when the mule which he was driving, kicked I him and broke his neck. The accident i occurred at 10:30 yesterday morning and the dead body of the young man j was round shortly after that by fel-1 low workmen. There were no eye wit- nesses, but it was plain to be seen that j the mule was the cause of death. An inquest was held and the verdict was in accord with those facts. The victim of the tragedy was born and reared in Sherrard, and had just attained his majority. He leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sass, Sr. three sisters and two brothers. HARRY KELLY LANDS A K.O.; BREAKS DIGIT Harry Kelly, who is signed up to play with the Decatur team in the Three Eye next summer, discovered today that he is the possessor of a broken finger, received a day or two ago when he planted a K. O. blow on some rowdy who insisted on trying to raise a rum pus in the Bijou cigar store. The row dy started after Kelly, but had to back water. Kelly noticed that his finger was bothering, but until this morning, thought it was only bruised. Now he is carrying it in a sling. Payson, started to dive after some 21 head of hogs which were squealing frantically, and before they had finished their task, the life savers were tired of life. Payson himself carelessly stepped off a raised plat form into water up to his shoulders, swalling several pints of muddy water. It was necessary to break a window in order to arouse the family of G. R. Brown, who were sleeping peacefully while the water was creeping into the house. The water did not fall until early this morning, and street cars-, which were forced to abandon all trips at 10 o'clock last night, were unable to re sume their Tuns until 8:30 this morn ing. FIRST BREAK-IT. It was the first break of ice in any of the streams In this vicinity, and was caused by the heavy volume of water which has poured from the hills as the snow and Ice have melted. Mill creek was o Jull of water last night and this morning that people who have lived near it all their lives could not recognize in it the little stream which all but goes out of existence every summer. Last night and this morning it tore and charged, roared and tum bled, and half frightened people out of their wits. It caused scarcely any damage, and today was receding rapidly Into its nat ural course, leaving nothing In Its wake but a lot of mud and many tons of broken ice. was a member. PORT BYRON TOT NEAR DEATH FROM SCALDING Vernon, the two-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. George Fields, residing near Port Byron, was terribly scalded yes terday when he stepped backwards into a boiler of boiling hot water, which had been placed on the floor by his mother, preparatory to doing the washing. When his clothes were re moved the skin came off with them. Weir, president of the Daven port school board, together with other members of the board, has entered a denial to the affidavits which were cir culated In Davenport previous to the election on the proposition of the election of a srhool stadium in which charges of graft were made, and in their denials, promise prosecution of ttose whom they claim have persecut ed them unless retraction of the affi davits is brought about. Named In the denial of the president, are Attorney Henry Vollmer, Dr. Radenhausen and Dr. Palmer. Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Kane, 284 8 Eighth avenue, died yesterday afternoon at 4. o'clock after having been 111 two weeks. The lad would have been 14 years old In May. He was a pupil at Lincoln school. Surviving are the parents, a brother, Francis, and a sister, Wilms. The funeral will be held Thursday morning at 9 o'clock from Sacred Heart church with Rev. J. F. Lockney in charge. Burial will t?ke place at Calvary cemetery. MRS. EDWARD MTRRT. Word was received in the city this morning of the death from pneumonia of Mrs. Edward Murry at St. Joseph's hospital, Joliet. Led by an irreslst- able impulse, Arthur Frost, an em ploye of the American Strawboard company at Wilmington, threw a bolt into the rolls at the plant yesterday ruined machinery, and held up work for half a day. Before Justice McCul loch in Joliet he said he did not know w hy he did it "I was working in the engine rooms,"' he said, "and felt com pelled to go to the second floor- to throw a bolt into the machinery."
