Sctri- Ter's office this morning, the board of i local Improvements passed a resolu-! tlon recommending that watermains j be laid along Eighteenth avenue and , Thirty-seventh, Thirty-eighth, Thirty-ninth and Fortieth streets, and I that an ordinance to govern the lm- J provement be presented to the munic ipal commission for consideration at i Its next meeting. The board set this! morning for a public hearing on the ' project but none of the property owners put In an appearance either to object to the improvement or to make recommendations to be con sidered in it. The paneage of the matter through ths commission will mean that the entire bluff district between Twenty fourth and Forty-sixth streets and Fourteenth and Eighteenth avenues will be equipped with ample water mains. Fire plugs will be located at very corner of the locality when the Improvement Is completed. HEARIXG POTPnRIJ. The public hearing for the laying of a sewer in the Forty-fifth street district was postponed till tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock. Wright, at the home of her sister, Mrs. J. J. O'Connor of Chicago, last night. Mrs. 'Wright was 40 years of age. She la survived by her husband, three sisters, Mrs. J. J. O'Connor, Mrs. Mary Hart and Miss Catherine Bro gan, and two brothers, William and Edward. The remains will arrive in the city tonight over the Rock Island. Personal Points Mrs. W. R. March left this morning for Jacksonville, III., where she ex pects to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Reese. Hans Schroeder, 924 Twentieth street, is at Colfax, Iowa, for a short stay. He will visit other points in the west before returning home. Jean Eberhardt has resigned his Position as head waiter at the New Harper because of failing health. He will leave for Colfax Springs in a few days. Miss Mabel Lewis, 1925 Ninth ave nue, who has been iconflned to her home by illness for the past few days, was able to resume her duties at the New Harper this morning. Charles Fieblg will leave tomorrow afternoon for bis farm, two miles be low Andalusia, with the Intention of (pending the summer and fall there for the purpose of recuperating. Mrs. Fie blg will accompany her husband. While n the south thlB winter, Mr. Fie blg was taken seriously ill and for a time he despaired of regaining his health. He realizes that only a com plete rest can bring the desired result and he will leave all business cares be hind him. WILL RECOMMEND RINK FOR MARKET Commissioner Archie Hart stated this morning that at this afternoon's informal session of the municipal commission, he intended to recom mend that the commission rent a portion of the Rock Island roller rink as a site for the city market which Is to be established. He has an option n a portion of the rink floor space for a period of six months at a rental which, to him, warrants the leasing of the building as a tem porary abode for the city market. The other site which is under con sideration, the 111 property on Six teenth street and Third avenue, can not be secured for a less amount, it is stated, and the cost involved in making Improvements would exceed the amount to be paid as rental for the rink. MILLER BROTHERS UNDER ARREST Edward and "Mopes" Miller, two native sons of Rock Island, whose propensities lean In a scrappy direc tion, were placed under arrest last night by Officer Dennis McCarthy, who served warrents sworn out by George McKarn alleging that the Mil ler brothers assaulted him Saturday night without provocation. Magis trate C. J. Smith has set tomorrow morning as the time of hearing of the case. "McKarn states that in their attack irpon him, the Millers used both fists and feet to put him out and that after one had knocked him down with a cutting blow on the face, the other kicked him. Of ficer Otto Herkert and Officer McCar thy were informed of the fight. Offi cer McCarthy notified the Millers to appear before the magistrate last night and they did so. It Is the statement of one of the officers that the Millers engaged in a wordy bat tle last night and but for interfer ence would have duplicated the fight of Saturday night. HOLD MRS. CONMERS ON CRIMINAL CHARGE Criminal relation charges have been preferred against Mrs. Florence Conners and her hearing before Mag istrate C. J. Smith was set for this afternoon, her arrest having been made Saturday evening in Daven port. The case is the outgrowth of alleged criminal relations between the woman and Ed Patten, who it is stated, has been living with the wo man as her husband. Patten Is in the county jail now on a charge similar to that preferred against the woman. His hearing is set for Saturday morn ing. Mrs. Conners has been living apart from her lawful husband for two years. The birth of a child a fortnight ago led to the charges against her and Patten. Assistant State's Attorney P. R. Ingelson, who Is Investigating the case, states that Mrs. Conners implicates a prominent business man. The child which was born, it is stated, was buried without the prop er burial permit. The other three children of the woman are to be tak en into the county court and declar ed delinquents. Mrs. Conners' case was continued for a period of 10 days, pending a further probe into the circumstances surround ing the case. BUSINESS AGENT IN NEW FIELD OF WORK Herman Jessen of Davenport, who for more than two years has been business agent of the paper hangers. painters and decorators of the tri cities, with offices in Rock Island, has resigned that position to embark in the interior and mural dacoration business in Davenport. He enters into the partnership with H. A. Ma chirus and will be located at 214 Main street. Edward Nielsen of Dav enport succeeds Mr. Jessen as busi ness pgent. The change went into effect yesterday. Apathy of the Brit ish public in the Titanic investigation was again demonstrated when the In quiry was resumed today. George Beauchamp, fireman of the Titanic, testified he did not know his boat sta tion, and did not know where to go when the vessel was wrecked. He said he had bad no boat drill on the Titanic. Quartermaster HIchens testified be had never been definitely assigned to any boat. At the time of the disaster an officer ordered him Into a lifeboat which carried two men as a crew. Hichens said the boat should have been manned with not less than five seamen in calm weather. Ird Mer sey asked If the lifeboats would have been of use at all In rough weather. The quartermaster replied emphatic ally he was sure they would not. REVERE TIRE COMPANY WAREHOUSE DESTROYED Providence, R. I., May 7. The storehouse of the Revere Rubber company, containing several hundred thousand dollars worth of automobile tires, was destroyed by fire this af ternoon. The train is a local and the commercial men state that people within a short distance of this city are unable to return to their homes after 1 o'clock at noon until midnight when the next local train leaves here, going east. Adulteration and misbranding of poisons intended to ex terminate insects, was charged by the government today In an information fil ed in the federal district court against two paint manufacturers. The action was taken under a new insecticide law to protect the farmers from sale of im pure poisons. CITY SETS ASIDE $5,000 FOR MOSQUITO CAMPAIGN St. Louis, May 7. The city's an nual appropriation bill reported to the ways and means committee of the municipal assembly last night pro vides $5,000 for a campaign against mosquitoes. $250,000 Gotham Fire.
