Madison's Pert In Giving the Execu tive Mansion Its Name. Just how the White Bouse came to be so designated is a question on which historians differ. A local his torian In Washington thinks that the burden of proof tends to give credit for the name to President Madison. The structure was made of Potomac river freestone, and the cnpitol proper was built of the same stone. At the time the British burned the executive mansion they did a lot of other dam age, and the country was pressed for money to repair the same. The walls of the mansion were only slightly dam aged, other than being blackened by smoke. Money was scarce, and con gress made an appropriatien to have the outside of the houie painted. White was selected hs the best color. Madi son in a letter to a personal friend wrote: "Come in and see me ut any time. You will always find me in at the White House." -' The executive mansion rnny have been called the White House before that time, bat this investigator says that he hus never been able to find any record of it If Madison did not offi ciate at the christening it has been er phatically stated hy the historian that he took a prominent part in pub lishing the fact that the White House wus to be' the name of the mansion. Up to the time of President Madison the executive mansion, which Is the legal name for It, was generally spo ken of as the president's bouse, but since then it has been known by its permanent name of White Uouse.--Ex-cbunge. A MEAL FOR A TIGER. The Ram Was a Fighter, Though, and Furnished a Surprise. Nature has made the tiger unequaled In the combination of speed, strength, cunning, during and physical beauty. A tiger's first bounds are so rapid as to bring it alongside an antelope, and a blow of its paw will stun a charging bull. Jt has been known to spring over j a wall five feet high into a cattle pen ! and to jump back with a full grown I animal in its jaws. Sportsmen say j tbey have known it to carry away the j bait while they were putting up the j shelters from which to shoot it. It Is a fact, however, that the tiger I makes no pr.4eue to Invincible tour , age. as may be seen In the Instance of j one kept In the Calcutta zoological gardens, wbl-h was butted to death by j a ram. A soldier owned a fighting j ram, which became so troublesome it I bad to be si'iit to the zoo. There It j caused so luiu-h annoyance it was de cided to give it to the great tiger. The tiger wjs so ferocious its food was let down through a sliding grat ing in the roof of its cage. The ram was lowered down. TCe tiger, dozing in one corner, saw the ram descend and. rising, began to stretch itself. The ram, not knowing he was intended to be food for the big beast, supposed the Stretching was the signal for a fight.
