Though last evening's special meet
ing circumvented any tanpiiile move
ment toward the improvement of
Ninth avenue, it served to biing 'ho
important project just a little closer
to the day of realization, for City At
torney J. F. Witter was instructed to
inquire into the matter to outline some
manner through which the lity can
attain to the ownership of a ;P-foot
strip of land 510 feet in length which
will serve to widen the avenue be
tween Seventeenth and Nineteenth
streets and which will ultimately re

It was explained that th- ci'y can
not affoid to do that at the present
time because of a depleted it y ex
chequer. The question f bonding the
improvement with public bonds was
broached, but it, too, w ent to the city
! attorney, w ith other matters, and he
will report within a very short time.
The question involves le:al phases
which, if they can be obliterated, will
allow the improvement to go ahead
tlPHOVE1IKT ri v
It is the plan to pave Nin'h avenue
should its widening become a re-
ality from Twelfth to Twenty-fifth
; street, -with asphalt. A SC-foot street
is the desire. At the present time the
strip where the widening is necessary
is but a V foot street w ith a sidewalk
only on the north side, and between the
j walk and the south side property line
nothing but a dust or mud-hole. A 1C-

Forty-fifth street property owners
gave consent last ni;;ht to the im
provement of Forty-tilth street by the
laying of a sewer from Fifth avenue
north to the river, provided satisfac
tory anan'-'- mi nts for the excavation
can be made. The street is bedded
with rock and the expense for the ex
cavation of rock must be borne by the
city water department. A water main
project is under c msideration in the
touits, and it is proposed to merge the
propositions in order to save excava
tion expenses. George Johnson of the
Moline Stone company proposed that
the city allow the company to exca
vate tiie rork free of charge and to
receive in return the stone for 'he
labor. Mr. Johnson pointed out that
the city could save from $3CM) to $500

i the matter again tomorrow morning
at 9 o'clock.
